Another vote for Samsung (Gonna go for it, myself, soon as I find an online store that has stock of those VGA Silencers).

i think it depends what size drive and over how long. all my maxtors start quiet then after 6 months are loud. i plump for seagate but havent heard the new samsungs.

the other thing to think about is the quiet drives seem to produce more heat than others, so maybe have a look for the heat reviews on seagate vs samsung

Another vote for samsung here, but make sure you have some sensible case airflow as they heat up easy and max spec temp is 55c.

Otherwise Baracuda IV, almost as quiet and temps are a bit lower with a higher ceiling.

    ok, a clarification.

it's about half as noisy as the old WD, there's barely any access noise, and it even feels faster (tho i'm not in the mood to bench to give an accurate response on that front

sorry if i was a bit blunt in my first post, was uncalled for

yeah, in RL you can hear the cuda V when its accessing data (i've used 2 x cuda IV's, and 2x cuda V's) i tihnk storagereview only measure idle noise..

try putting rubber feet beneath your case..

i have a 120gb sata maxtor 9, and a 40gb ibm deathstar... before i put the system in a case, i was running it with two 80mm liquid bearing fans (one on 7v, the other on 80% (via mobo)), i couldnt actually hear that the computer was running until i was about a meter away it was that quiet.. i'd put the harddrives on some bubblewrap too.... then yesterday when my case finally arrived (coolermaster black widow), and i put everything in... same amount of fans connected it is stupidly loud, simply because of the harddrives!! think i'll have to download something to fiddle with the acoustic management (tho i have a feeling they are already set to the quiet mode)

anyhow, back to the point, the liquid bearing maxtor 9s seem quiet, but it seems when you put them in a case they arent hmm.
