i think it depends what size drive and over how long. all my maxtors start quiet then after 6 months are loud. i plump for seagate but havent heard the new samsungs.
the other thing to think about is the quiet drives seem to produce more heat than others, so maybe have a look for the heat reviews on seagate vs samsung
Another vote for samsung here, but make sure you have some sensible case airflow as they heat up easy and max spec temp is 55c.
Otherwise Baracuda IV, almost as quiet and temps are a bit lower with a higher ceiling.
they even have tiny little rubber feet on the bottom of the samsung drives
my 80gb benchmarked at about 62.2mb/s start, 60.4mb/sec end, 9.11 access time in winbench99 10gb drive c, NTFS, Windows 2000

According to This graph at StorageReview.com, the barracuda V is quieter than the barracuda IV. This is only idle noise though, I can't find anything for accessing noise.
yeah, in RL you can hear the cuda V when its accessing data (i've used 2 x cuda IV's, and 2x cuda V's) i tihnk storagereview only measure idle noise..
storagereview are really cool tho -check out the new raptor, its awesome
try putting rubber feet beneath your case..Originally posted by Bindibadgi
The only thing that pisses me off about harddisks is the vibration. Ive got mine on a load of foam padding yet the table still vibrates enough to keep me awake sometimes (the 12db cpu can i cant hear), but i put my finger on it and it stops
i have a 120gb sata maxtor 9, and a 40gb ibm deathstar... before i put the system in a case, i was running it with two 80mm liquid bearing fans (one on 7v, the other on 80% (via mobo)), i couldnt actually hear that the computer was running until i was about a meter away it was that quiet.. i'd put the harddrives on some bubblewrap too.... then yesterday when my case finally arrived (coolermaster black widow), and i put everything in... same amount of fans connected it is stupidly loud, simply because of the harddrives!! think i'll have to download something to fiddle with the acoustic management (tho i have a feeling they are already set to the quiet mode)
anyhow, back to the point, the liquid bearing maxtor 9s seem quiet, but it seems when you put them in a case they arent hmm.
mark
also got a barra V and its is pritty good - can hear any whine althought the access noise is quite audiable (with a quite rig and averyone in the house asleep!!)Originally posted by Aaron
I've got a Seagate Barracuda V, which according to Seagate's marketting, is the quietest HD around at the moment. Even with a very queit system, I hardly ever hear it at all.
