newbie help needed with E6300 and memory

    Hi,

Excuse my ignornance, but what speed memory do I need to run an Intel E6300 ?

Also, do these cpus generally overclock and if that is the case, would I need faster memory?

    thanks for any advice.

Normally people get the 5300 RAM or 6400 RAM for Conroe and for AM2, 6400 obviously being faster and more allowing for overclocking of the Conroe. RAM prices are going up/have gone up recently so if you have a budget you may end up getting the 5300 as it's still good but lighter on the wallet.

Corsair works with all the boards so that's one you can buy and not worry about compatability with, but it doesn't allow for as much overclocking as say G.Skill or Geil or any of the others that people will point you towards.

hi FInalD and thanks for the info.
What is a half decent overclock for the E6300?
Could you get it up to 333mhz fsb?
If so (and correct me if I'm wrong), that would mean that the ram would need to be DDR2 667 (i.e. 667= 2x 333)

Well I don't know a huge amount overclocking a Conroe as I do not own one myself (and don't plan on buying one... they all say), but I do know that people have managed to get upwards of 3.0GHz out of their 6300s, this does depend on what they are doing for cooling. The stock cooler will not cool enough to aloow 3Ghz (well I doubt it will anyways).

There are couple of threads buried in Hexus about how to overclock and what people have got, here is the smaller of the two (only a couple pages) and here is the larger of the two threads. I'd say you should read them both through completely to make sure you understand a bit more about the speeds, temps etc.

Hope that's a decent amount of help.

ives I have my 6300 overclocked to 3ghz, they overclock real well. As for ram I'd recommend Corsair XMS2 5400 C4. I unfortunately had to rma mine and got Geil 6400 as a replacement. I wish I still had my Corsair as it's easier to overclock with, my Asus board.

£160ish can get you Team Xtreem DDR667 3-4-4-8 stuff from www.memory-configurator.com . The stuff overclocks amazingly, you might be suprised just how fast it can go (mine can run at 1ghz easily currently.....motherboard doesnt like it running higher)
