DDR2 RAM Speeds

Hmmmm, ok, so to save money I'm gonna look at the 6300, the idea being it's faster than my existing x2 4400 setup and I can stick a better CPU in there when they come down in price.

so what RAM do I want then in reality?
Want 2Gb as thats what I have currently, as I was looking at bloody fast stuff then I guess I can possibly shift on chip or motherboard as ram now isnt going to be £250+
Motherboards looking at are the Abit AB9-Pro or an Abit AW9D.
The rest of my kit is being ported over.

2x300Gb IDE Drives
2x300Gb SATA Drives
2x250Gb SATA Drives
Prolly gonna end up sticking 2 of the IDE Drives on the SATA Channels as both of the above boards have a single ATA Channel which the optical drives will go on.

In generall there is little real-world performance to be had by running the memory faster than the FSB.

So how do you take advantage of this extra speed?

You overclock the hell out of your CPU. No reason not to OC a core 2, they do it so well.

So I could go for say PC2-5000 or there abouts which would give me a fair boost FSB wise over the 4200 stuff, or maybe get some nice 5000 that I can run at tighter timings @4200 speeds.

Well that's certainly true for the AMD chips, but I think the results for core 2 duo show that there is actually a performance gain in running the memory faster - up to a certain extent anyway. It's not anything earth shaking through.

Reducing the multiplier and increasing the FSB (keeping the memory at the same level as the increasing FSB) does help performace a fair bit tho.

Yup, because you're overclocking the whole system communication as well as having faster memory speed.
