New HDD reporting wrong size in windows

Just built a new PC for a friend and everything is running great apart from the 250gb HDD is only showing in windows as a 128gb. I know you lose a little to formatting, but that's silly

Anything I need to do to get it to show the correct amount of space?

right click on "my computer" select "manage", select "disk management" and you should see the unused disk space. Right click on the unused disk space and enable.....

Install SP2. Should fix it.

both of the above, in fact, are required

winxp has a 128GiB (137GB) limit on hard disks - it can't see any further than that. SP1 fixed this - but the newly found space cannot be merged with the existing partition without use of third party tools

definitely install SP2, and then:

either a) create a new partition with the empty space b) resize the partition using a tool like gparted or partition magic c) make a slipstreamed sp2 windows install cd, then reinstall (the slipstreamed disc should see the full size of the drive at install time)

Ok found that, thank you. Do I have to have the drive as 2 seperate drives? Can I not just have 1 big drive?

Nope, full SP2 and all updates as of today are on.

to extend the current partition into the space you have free you need a third party tool as mentioned by Directhex. For making a slipstreamed install CD have a look at www.nliteos.com - there are other ways, but this is by far the easiest

Thanks for the helps guys, he's happy with a seperate partion so I'll do that for now.
