Athlon 64 AM2 Temperature

Hi guys,

I posted on another thread that I had been having probs with my new computer freezing a great deal.

I've now noticed that my new CPU - the AMD Athlon 64 AM2 is running at 127 degrees whilst the suggested max is 64'ish.

Can anybody held me reduce the temperature? Also, I've made some changes in the BIOS (nothing crazy though) and now, when the PC reboots it takes forever and then loads straight into windows avoiding the POST sequence.

If anybody can help me with any of this then a big thanks in advance

127 Fahrenheit is that ~53 Celsius? is the max 64 Celsius?

Did it change the CPU voltage in the bios?

Try refitting the HSF, may be use some thermal paste .. in fact check you have a HSF? Is the Fan on the Heatsink working?

If the CPU is too hot you will get random errors, I have a opteron 165 the M/B reports it idling at 28 Celsius ~82 Fahrenheit, and AM2 should be similar.

What is the model of M/B and CPU?

thanx for the reply, yes it is celsius. It has a bit of thermal paste on it (the one that melts itself) and I followed the cpu instructions to the letter. The cpu fan is working and I have a large fan blowing a veritable gale force onto the cpu. For some reason the system is skipping its post and going straight into windows.

to me 127 sounds like the sensor isnt working, since thats the maximum value the sensor will read (its a 1 byte address, so 255 possible combinations = +-127) So not to worry. What software are you using to monitor temps?

I know speedfan shows my cpu temp as -40 degs, but the actual cpu is listed as temp 4 or something.

Run Prime 95 and whichever value jumps dramatically and quickly is your cpu temp.

thanks man, will do that now. my mobo is brand new - if the sensor isn't working should I return it?

It depends what software youre using, if its not one that came with th mobo then likely its just displaying the sensors in the wrong locations.

I would imagine that you can access the sensors in the bios (theres usually a pc health tab or something similar) Knock the machine off, then restart and look in there, if it still reads wrong likely the sensors on the fritz, as i can guarantee the chip isnt running at 127 degrees, or itd be crashing all over the place.

Yeah, there is a setting that causes the POST checks to happen be hurried along in your BIOS...

I've sorted most things out now, thanks a lot to you guys, but the PC is still freezing... I reckon I'll just take the CPU back to the store and see what they have to say

ntvdm.exe is NT Virtual DOS Machine, and is used to run old 16-bit DOS-based programs. It is a harmless file from what I can tell, and is probably a red herring for another problem.
