Motherboard and Memory for my C2D setup - Opinions

After almost 2 months of problems with the RMA of my previous motherboard and memory I have finally recieved a refund for the 2 items leaving me with £310 to get myself something new.

Setup has the following.

E6300 - Tuniq Tower HSF
XFX 7900GT
Seasonic S12 600W

My old motherboard was the P5W DH deluxe. It was nice, but it was problematic with my drives, wouldnt detect the HDD at all to begin with, then my DVD drive caused a post error on evey boot yet still functioned perfectly normal.

Old memory I believe was 2GB Corsair 6400 CL5 or CL4 maybe... but one of the modules packed in and the system wouldnt post when it was installed.


So I'm looking into getting the new Commando motherboard from Asus, it has proved itself to OC and outperform the likes of the asus striker and 680i. Two insanely overpriced motherboards in my opinion. The commando looks like it will hit the spot though. Quad-Core support, huge oc capability, LCD poster (may prove useful as I have had the previous components dormant for 2 months), and the very fact its Asus.

As for memory I'm not really sure what to get, 2GB of 6400 at CL4 or lower would be nice, compatability with the commando too :)

So this board being P965 as aposed to 975 what do I miss out on? The 975 is named the enthusiasts choice, but the new 965 on the commando has been able to reach higher FSB speeds than any 975 board. I'll look for the article later.

So... is the commando a good choice? I saw the discussion thread and it looks promising. No solid reviews from hexus or xbitlabs or tomshardware as far as I know, so I don't want to dive in. And could someone pick out some decent memory for me, does NOT have to be Corsair as I will NOT be buying from SCAN, it was them who caused me enough trouble in the first place with the initial RMA and the customer service I recieved was outright terrible. Good prices, their customer support really let me down. Unless someone can do some serious convincing I don't think I will ever purchase from them again.

P5B deluxe wifi - tried and tested, rock solid, great overclocker, plenty of support.

I have also had the P5Wdh and hated it.

The corsair cl4 and 5 both work fine in the P5B deluxe boards that I have had, so no worries there.

ASUS Commando - the next Generation P5B Deluxe (I hope).....

I have always found SCAN absolutly great, but have not had to RMA anything to them.

dunno, Im almost dead set on commando. Just waiting for some solid reviews and for SCAN to finally transfer the credit to my account.

Let say Commando=£160 (Avg with postage)

leaves roughly £150-£180 for the memory, any ideas? Memory prices seem to have gone UP :|...

Corsair 2GB PC-6400 CL5 cost me only £145, now I cant find it for under £180!?!

So can anyone suggest some memory that will actually boost performace or does it tend to not differ between makes?

Its just with you saying that you have had to rma one board and ram, I thought you might fancy a dead cert this time :)

Custom PC have a Commando so should have a review soon, others will appear, those that there are of pre-release samplea are very encouraging. I hope to fire it up at the weekend.

Mine was £144 - so you can drop your budget price a tenner.

The ASUS Striker Extreme(680i SLI) motherboard max overlcock is 504MHz FSB
The Commando (P965) beats this massively at 520MHz.
ASUS claims it can reach 570MHz easily but 520 is the current max anyone has been able to reach.

this of course makes it the most overclockable mobo on the market today - so yes get it, i am!

I have one:) , I haven't started overclocking yet but it's a very nice package. No probs with the RAM g skill hz pc2 6400 black stuff:) , although you might of seen I had a few probs with the cooler but that is my inexperence:lol: , the lcd poster thinggy really did help,
go for it you wont regret it:) .

Having been pondering about what to build next for about a year...... I bought an E6700 when I visited Washington in December, but which motherboard was the BIG question. I had been holding for launch of 680i ... but it seemed far too expensive - cirtainly not worth the money and had issues - it did not live up to expectations.

So I decided to go P5B Deluxe... I was just about to order one when I came across the Commando (about 3 weeks ago) I did a bit of digging to find out what I could and like what I found - even though useful info was scarce. I got a good feeling/intuition about this (I was also interesed in the abit AB9 QuadGT) - and I decided to go with my instinct and pre-ordered the Commando.

good choice. pretty nicely priced aswell!

i would say geil cas 4 pc6400 2gb kit is pretty good quite cheap atm about £165

well worth it imo
