    Not really played this yet

I purchased il-2 several months ago but i still have not played it as my desk is crap for putting joysticks on, I even payed for a new Cyborg Evo just to play it. I need a new desk, I must confess that i could not even take off though.

It's definately worth the practise.... and worth buying a new desk for!!!

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time.... It was them that started me drinking.

Wedge, just try air starts first, to get a handle on the planes and how they fly.

After a while you'll get the 'feel' of them. Take offs aren't too hard. Go for something like a Hurricane and open the throttle gradually. The physics are very realistic, so the plane will swing off course, which you have to correct with a touch of rudder, let the speed build and pull back once its past 190 or so. Level off immediately, get the gear up and you're away.

It does take practise, but its not too hard. Some planes are more tricky than other.. the I-153 is a reet bugger to get up in the air, so leave that one for a bit. Keep plugging away at it and it'll all click into place.

Gotta say that this is the only game I've found in years of playing that rewards the effort you put in.

    OH YEAH.....DO WE EVER

for starters, there is a Virtual Onine War called VEF (Virtual Eastern Front)

entire groups of virtual pilots gather using software called Hyperlobby.....two people Host and request a mission from the main server....
then upward of 8 to 16 pilots fly a mission to defend Russia from the Luft Waffe or RAF defending the coast of France (in V W F) .....every bullet, ever kill, every stall, ever turn is monitored...

    and the map changes accordingly...

its not a game matey....its LIFE

by the way.....finest plane to LEARN in is a Lagg3 1941...

if you go into Quick Mission Builder, you are the TOP one...choose Lagg3 1941...

next lot down are FRIENDLY>.....choose 4 in the drop down box, and choose TB3...thatsa a big old Russian Bomber....

now......hit Fly and you will be with 4 non aggressive bombers.....use your Hatswitch to look around find the buggers, and although they are supposed to be firendlly, shoot them down....

they wont fire back so all you gotta do is practice....
    see ya in 6 months

I take it that it is not easy to play even in the air then, as I stated before taking off is bad enough. Jesus, I just thought, what about landing? ops:

Nah, landing is easy... just remember that the angle of arrival is inversely proportional to the chance of survival. eg, high angle of arrival = low chance of survival.

Serious bit now.....for the full effect of Il2 FOrgooten Battles....

Go to Multiplayer.....Create New Server choose any of them.....in difficultly make sure you allow Externals....

Launch the server...(its oK its not online...its just for you to practice on)

    Chhose Lagg3 1941....hit fly.

Righty....on runway....Hit F2 and use mouse to scroll about OUTSIDE plane.....left click and hold to zoom in and out....have a damn good look around your plane...and MOVE THE JOYSTIC to see the control surfaces move...

so PULL BACK/PUSH FORWARD and you get the ELEVATORS on the back to move

LEAN LEFT/RIGHT is roll....thats AERILONS (sp?) and thats the wing surfaces....

TWIST your stick.......see the RUDDER move at the back....

Now hit V for flaps...see them drop low....that aids lift but slows you down..hit V again..they drop lower....

    F raises them in stages....

Hit I for engine on....wait for it to starts and wiggle the throttle to help her catch..then throttle back to zero....see the smoke and the plane twists a bit....this is full on matey...full on

Now....as you open the throttle the air is pushed past the tail fin....if you twist the tail fin, even if not moving....she'll twist on the runway...

hold down B (brake) and twist with about 30% power......she'll twist and maybe even nose down and bend the prop !

To take off......use External views (F2 is moveable, F8 is follow ) to find you way to middle of runway.....gentle throttle matey...and DONT HIT THE BRAKES cos the planes will nose down.....throttle up and down and crawl to the middle of the runway...

now...get straight....maybe point a bit LEFT cos the prop will twist you RIGHT in this baby......she's a good plane,,,trust her.....be nice....be polite....dont rush her...
    Hit F8 for follow camera
Now.....drop flaps to TAKE OFF>..(thats V twice) and bring power up to full in a long slow push....not to heavy....takes about 3 seconds to go from 0 to 110%.....and as she starts rolling expect the tail to lift (weighs nothing) and then a wing will dip.....

its now that she'll also turn a gentle right....
SO>>>>>you gotta twist her gently straight AND lean the joystick to the side to keep her FLYING ALONG THE TARMAC>>>>>.dont pull back....let her build to 200 kph and then ease back gently.......there ya go.....

the finest plane ever made....you'rs for the taking....

Hit F twice to raise flaps AND HIT G for gear up.....listen to the machanicals working......she'll go all smooth and lovely now.....fly along in a nice straight libe at a few hundred off the floor until youre speed is about 300 maybe 350....then fly her like the dream she is

    Luck pilot

If you want to play online Forgotten Battles with Aces Expansion Pack is the way to go. It's better, and has many more aeroplanes to scare yourself in.
