This is how Diablo 3 could have been remembered; a dark and dangerous epic. Open beta out tomorrow and best of all its free to play.

Going to wait and see how this turns out instead of buying it straightaway like I did with Diablo 3. I must admit, it does look nice lol.
Open Beta?
Go Go Go!
Path of Exile has had open beta weekends for quite a while, although i haven't played it recently they added a new character 'Shadow' and act III.
Quite a nifty game, passive-skill grid for levelling up is brilliant, huge amount of control and choice. Being able to pick and mix abilities based on 'gems' is a neat system - although you do end up having to factor in the sockets on equipment and occassionally stick with something with slightly lesser stats just because it doesn't have the sockets.
Good game though
Didn't really like it :/
Was abit confusing at the start imo
Preferred Diablo 3
I haven't played it much but I'm liking it so far. The skill tree is lovely.
I've played about ten levels so far, it's interesting but doesn't have any wow factor to it. The skill tree system is its big party piece and that certainly has you pondering over which way best to spec but other than that...hmmm, a bit meh.
Downloaded the open beta, and after about 5-6 hours of playing it, I found it a bit meh tbh. Maybe its all the possibilities going over my head, but I still prefer Diablo 3 at this point. I'll see where Path of Exile is at in a couple of months and give it another go.
I think the days of pure hack n slash are over unless theres some sort of unpredictability that makes you feel more threatened than by merely what you encounter and kill along a path.
Being able to customize your character is not enough - you need a gimmick.
Its a pity, graphic wise at least captures the darker element D3 lacked but the same repetitive point - shoot or hit - kill is just brainkill AFAIC

You know what you're buying into when you fire up a hack n slash, it's mindless click-click-click kill-kill-kill; end of. The problem is this just doesn't have enough...'oomph'. A good hack n slash needs to be fluid but frantic while retaining a level of responsiveness that doesn't leave you feeling detached from the action.
One thing someone pointed somewhere was the lack of variation in meaningful animated maneuvers these days - in other words not so much combos but things that stand out in some iconic way .
Head chopping off heads ala Barbarian or Dragon Age , or burning folk running about after being hit by a fireball, ripped in two , crapped out , vampires appearing out of vapor / mist ... so on
Little elements or charms that break things up , add an element of surprise and charm that catch you off guard ..
Doesnt have to be all gorey , blood n guts ..

Been watching a few streams for this game, I enjoyed Diablo 3, but the fun was taken out of it too quickly. Don't think i'd play another hack and slash again.
Some of you need to play Hardcore League if you think this is boring
