I was going to suggest the X series - if you're very quick you can get everything released to date in the humble bundle weekly sale. Pay what like, although I'd suggest you pay more than $6 so you get all the DLC. I've probably got about 400 hours in each of X1 and X2, and have X3 but am desperately trying not to get into the empire building side of it as its a massive time vortex.

Hey Mike, if you don't mind substandard graphics and medieval-style fighting, Mount and Blade (and Warband) can be a lot of fun - I don't think I've ever played another game that has such absorbing combat (except perhaps Chivalry: Medieval Warfare). It's a complete sandbox game with no storyline to it (other than the one you invent ), so it's a completely free-roaming adventure with plenty of mods available from the community (including a Star Wars one for the original game).

Have you tried Don't Starve available on Steam. A really well made adventure game. Will run on most recent laptops, not need for a monster gaming pc.

State of Decay is early access on steam... officially requires a controller (the discussion boards have the working key mapping) but the rest of the game is more or less 100%.

Zombie survival open world. Very good

Some good suggestions here, definitely +1 to Don't Starve and Mount and Blade.

    Re: Adventure/Sandbox Games - Suggestions?

Aside of what people reccomended I also reccommend:

    1. Nehrim - this is completly new game on TES:Oblivion engine
    more info here: http://www.nehrim.de/

    2. STALKER games. Maybe already start with fixed and modded version.
    more info : http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-complete-2009

    3. Fallout 3

I do reccomend using FO3 Wandeder's Edition mod
    info: http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/2761/

    4. Morrowind. It is an old game, but if you use MGSO 3.0 mod pack, it looks quite alright.

    more info: http://www.ornitocopter.net/morrowind-overhaul/

    5. Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines

    6. The Witcher 3' will release in 2014 which I would also keep my eye on.

For single player free roaming / sandbox games - modding is great thing. Can supply better experience, more gameplay and games and also better graphics and generally make it better.
I would check out things like:
    - Nexus Mod Manger http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/modmanager//?
    - BOSS - http://boss-developers.github.io/
    - Gopher - guy on youtube that like sandboxy games - also make tutorials for modding http://www.youtube.com/user/GophersVids

    Re: Adventure/Sandbox Games - Suggestions?

A while ago, I mentioned a game called Survive by Subsurface Games in this thread. It's still very much in its infancy but the developer has been quite active and has ambitious plans for the game. The blog on the developer's website (http://www.subsurfacegames.com/) is a good view into these plans. It also shows a price of $19.95 which is why I was surprised to see it turn up on Indie Royale which packs a couple other interesting games with it. It is currently going for a minimum price of £3.18.

Skyward Collapse is a name which is familiar for some reason and 3089 looks interesting, if only because I am an absolute sucker for procedural generation. You get Desura/Steam keys for all games so I'd recommend getting this bundle.

Saints Row is sort-of open world, from what little I've played of it. Not my kind of game and I get easily bored by it, but you can go pretty much anywhere.

Freelancer is halfway there during the initial Single player campaign, but is then wide open afterward, with a good 50% of the universe still completely unexplored. Plus you still have online servers, should you so desire (Freelancer Universe is a good one to start with).

LEGO Lord Of the Rings unlocks free-play after you complete each area.

From my experience, as I love lone character games I would recommend for you Risen series or even older titles if you don't mind poor graphic Gothic (2nd one is the best). Two Worlds series is not to bad too.

You could also buy Minecraft, download the Technic Launcher and then play Hexxit or any one of the more RPG/Adventure oriented mods. I like this because Minecraft is inherently flexible in player actions, with infinitely large worlds and the thing I enjoy the most is building a home, outposts and burning time. Oh god... so much time...

edit; it's not out yet but one game to keep an eye on is Survive by . If you read the 'gameplay features' post, it really fits nicely into what I'd want out of a game like this.
Yeah I like to play Minecraft ! It is awesome.
