I think a lot of it is people wanting something, anything, to geek out about. They want a massive SC fix each time they log on.
Also, they forget that this was funded so the Devs could make the game they wanted without the external influences and pressures of a publisher, that thinks they should get a say in something because they hold the purse strings, regardless of whether they know aught about gaming or not.
That is the long and short of it, but backers similarly think that donating money into this somehow entitles them to an actual say, rather than their little-voice opinions *possibly* being taken into account on grand-scale matters. They're donations, not investments or shares.

In 'what not to do' #2, he mentions jousting and Tokyo-drifting. A mix of those two and a few other tricks is the main way you win a fight in Freelancer.
#3 was also interesting - I've taken over an hour chasing down a CapShip in my own, alternating between Warp Speed and 25m/s, covering almost 300km and only winning through tactics. It was like a game of chess and was a very cool battle, possibly my favourite space battle I ever flew in... but I'd not want to do that all the time!!
So is all this Newtonian stuff simply Newton's three laws of motion, applied to my spaceship... or is there more to it?
