Win 10: CoD W@W wont run

Any idea what I do now?

I don't know if I should install an old version of Direct X or not? I'd rather not tbh

Do I just find a copy of the .dll file online and whack it into the windows folder?

Any help please would be great.

Check your disc for the DX setup file and run it, if not there is a legacy thing that Win 10 can install for older DX stuff.

Sometimes finding the file and sticking it in the game install folder will trick it into playing.

DX is still going strong and is up to version 12 now.

My GUESS (and I am not a games developer) is that there are OS hooks you can probe nowadays for which versions of DX are available, but back in the day they weren't reliable so developers tried to hook directly into the DLLs instead. Since we're up to DX11/DX12 now presumably the DX9 files aren't part of the installation, so games that try to hook directly into specific versions of the files don't get on so well. COD W@W is trying to link directly to a DX9 DLL.

Certain games need to have specific bits of Direct X, hence why you can install the SDK version from Miicrosoft which covers loads of builds and essentially enabling backwards type support.

Most cases you will see that the installed directory or the disc will have a Direct X folder, iif something isn't quite going right initially start by trying to install the version that ships with the game.

If that doesn't work go the Google - Fu route to see if anyone else is having the same issue and occasionally there will be an easy solution like above.

Anothjer issue I have encountered especially with some of the older games is the DEP (Data Execution Prevention) can block a games exe file from running and rendering the game non working so adding any exe involved with the game (launcher and the likes) iinto the exclusion list can resolve some non running issues.

There is also the Program Files issue with older games, they are monitored by the UAC form Vista and newer and can stop stuff from running, so don't install older stuff into Prog Files, put it in a root directory or maybe create another directory in root and then install within a game name folder in there

Yeah, that's an interesting one. NWN has issues if you forget to run with Admin privs, as Windows creates an additional virtual Prog File folder in your user space and all your save files suddenly go missing

Actually, I assume you've tried running under compatability modes, Zak? It could be as simple as Windows not giving the game permissions to access the file as it's not running as admin....?

I figured you probably would, but there's always that risk of assuming something's obvious to me so it must be obvious to everyone else....
