I guess it is a bug, I talked to Fl@sh and he said same thing happened to him in another VEF mission - he rammed an i16 after shooting at it, got through it and zoomed away, than i16 blew up.
However I think I had more distance from i16 when it blew up than the yak.

don't worry - happened to me to ramm the right wing of an i16 I just shot at (and I could see through it) only to loose my wing and the little bugger keeps on flying.
