Buying a digital camera...and relocating abroad

hiya. i have a dillema as to what type of camera i want to buy. i'm relocating to Canada in a few months and i beleive it is 110v there. i thought buying a digital camera which supports AA batteries would be best (as AA batteries can be bought/found almost anywhere) rather than the Li-ion ones.

    1. would you agree?

    2. would cameras brught here in the UK have no problem whilest charging there?

    3. what rechargeable AA batteries would you guys recommend?

I would be amazed if the mains power adapter or seperate battery pack charger that comes with any current digital camera cannot handle both 110V and 240V. I have two Canon external chargers, a Panasonic and countless other power bricks and they are all rated for at least 110v to 24v at 50-60hz. Some even go as far as 100-250v.

This is not an issue these days.

I've just checked a couple of Canon chargers and an Olympus one and, as Funkstar said, they're multi-voltage auto-switching. But they're chargers for SLR batteries I'm checking. If you're looking at a budget camera, it'd be worth verifying that before buying.

Typically, though, I'd expect a good lithium ion ion battery is likely to give a lot better life, especially between recharges, than AAs.

Are you looking at just a point and click or a DSLR?

Where abouts in canade are you going. if its close to the boarder with the yanks wouldnt it be better to wait till ur over there and then buy a camera over there for way cheaper?

im looking for this so-called bridge cameras...compact yet has features like an SLR. i want to buy a camera here in the UK so i can take some pictures like immediately once i'm there at the airport, etc. my main "worry" is if i charge the phone there (considering i have an adaptor) since it is 110V would it generally affect one's camera?

oh btw, im going to Alberta (im kind of expecting to be there by this spring-summer '09)

the reason why i liked the ones with AA batteries is that they can also be rechargeable and you can buy them almsot anywhere (grocery, camera shop,et al) unlike the brick Li-ion ones wherein you need to charge them on the mains. if you know what i mean.

Limiting yourself to a camera that take AA batteries is pointless. The only ones I've seen recently, in the form factor you are looking at, is the Fuji's, and they are pretty low end cameras.

I just can't imagine this will be a problem. You can pick up aditional battery packs online for under £10 (and really cheap dodgy ebay ones for about £5 inc postage). I did this for new cameras for my mum and brother for christmas. Both Panasonic, both Li-Ion, both under £10 from Play.com.

Re: Buying a digital camera...and relocating abroad

There are some Canon compacts that have full manual controls and take AA batteries - the A590, A720 and A650, in order of ascending price/features. The first two take 2xAA, while the A650 takes 4xAA and is a bit bulkier. It's getting very hard to buy the A720 and A650 as they have been discontinued in favour of less capable cameras, but you should still be able to buy an A590 quite cheaply (eg: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...A3P5ROKL5A1OLE)

Re: Buying a digital camera...and relocating abroad

i've learned of this 2500mAh and 2700mAh AA batteries that can take more than 400 shots by CIPA standard. so, that is how im kind of liking this cameras that take AA's. and you can just buy AA's almost anywhere...
