    My Northants Infrared church series

The story so far - Since I moved to Northampton, Ive discovered the amount of history in the surrounding area is amazing, loads of Norman and even Saxon buildings and churches. A while ago, I got into infrared, and a thought occurred to me that no one had so far done a series of IR church pics for the county. Plans were laid, 210 churches pre 1600AD in the county ! Quite a task. It's currently stalled due to ill health, but I will get back to it again.

18 down, a lot to go.....

Abington, infrared/HDR with reintroduced colour -

Brixworth, a supposed Saxon church dating back as far as 680AD ! Loads of Roman roofing tiles over all the archways...

Cogenhoe (pronounced "cuknoe") with a touch of colour -

Earls Barton, with it's Saxon tower from 970AD. This one was inspired by the work of Sir Simon Marsden -

    Ecton -

Great Billing, the closest church to me. I love this one cuz of the shadows of the branches on the right, echoing the tree at the rear -

Re: My Northants Infrared church series

Harlestone, right on the edge of the Althorp estate -

Kislingbury. I've managed to sell more copies of this than all the others put together, no idea why !

Little Houghton (howton / horton - you tell me no-one seems to agree!)

Mears Ashby, not so happy with this, the clouds have burned out. One for a reshoot.

St Giles, this is where Sally and I are getting married on Dec 4th Still one of my favourite IR shots...

Weston Favell, another very close one, and another for a reshoot, those shadows are a tad annoying

Wilby, again, not sure about this one - what do you think ?

Well there we go, that's most of them. A few were mock infrared, just Photoshopped to make them look like it, but I've not shown those. I've still a very long way to go....

Nikon D200 or D70, and Sigma 10-20mm lens with a Link Delight R72 filter.
    Cheers, David

Re: My Northants Infrared church series

have never tried IR did you make any alterations to the camera, or did you just use the filter? I have a spare D70 I was going to sell on ebay, but had pondered using it for IR

Should have said, really like the photos, they definitely add atmosphere

Congrats on your sales, but they don't sell IR photography to me. I'm always keen to try new things out, what would you say to persuade me? Particularly, why IR and not simply monochrome?

They're really interesting g8ina, I quite like some of the reintroduced colour ones from an artistic viewpoint.

Re: My Northants Infrared church series

Flibb, just a R72 filter and Photoshop. D70 is 10x more sensitive to IR than the D200, due to an "improved" IR filter fitted to the later model D200. D70 only needs 2-3 seconds to the 30 seconds on the D200 all other things being equal.

Rugger - its to do with contrast for me and the way it treats green foliage and the clouds and sky - deciduous leaves and grass tend to go white while blue skies go black while retaining white clouds. Also the time exposure makes the clouds blur, which for me is a nice effect.

This one is NOT one of mine, but eventually I aspire to produce stuff like this -

Title: Infrared World, Photographer: Mark Bond

Thanks Kal, personally, Im not as keen on the colour as the mono, but more folk appear to like the colour stuff more

Re: My Northants Infrared church series

Racist!!! You've got Great Billing & Cogenhoe's but not Grendon's and it's only just up the road. (I was born and grew up in Grendon, Mum used to teach at Cogenhoe primary school so I'm biased) To be fair Cogenhoe & Grendon have fairly similar churches if memory serves me well although it's been nearly 20 years since I've been back there.

You're right though there are loads of ancient churches in the county, I remember we did a study of the different architectures of them one summer and it was really interesting, even for a 10 year old.

P.S. it's pronounced Little Hoeton or possibly Howton (I think......20 odd years and a faded country bumpkin accent don't aid the memory but I'll see if Mum remembers )

P.P.S. Looking at those pictures makes me remember how good my childhood was growing up in that area, you're a lucky bugger if you're living in or around one of those villages/places.

Thanks for that g8ina, really appreciate it! And I like the picture & angle, gives it a somewhat "dark & moody" feel.
