Had a play with the 500D, and I like it very much (but then I should with it being £500 of kit). Turns out another fellow in the office has a Nikon 5000D, so I'm going to get him to bring it in tomorrow.
Jessops seems to be priced pretty close to the internet, and they have stores in Chester and Manchester (which is ideal for me) so I'll likely get whatever I get from there, what are peoples experiences with Jessops in general?

Now my supervisor (he has 10s of cameras of all different, and literally 100s of lenses, He's got 4 dSLRs - 350D, 40D and two other which I forget) says I should get a Nikon.
The lack of autofocus in the bodies of the D5000/D3000 puts me off them though, so I thought about spending a bit more and getting a D90, I can afford it but it's whether or not it's worth affording.

I never found it a limitation for my old D40x. The only lens it ruled out for me is the 50mm f1.8 (which is a shame given the value of the nifty fifties, but I eventually bought a f1.4 G), but now there is the 35mm f1.8 which is probably a better length for a crop body anyway.
Other than that, it's only the 85mm f1.8 which I might have otherwise bought - everything else I've looked has had the motor.
Keep in mind there are also Tamron (such as the highly regarded 17-50mm f2.8 (the older non-VC version)) and Sigma (like the excellent 50mm f1.4) lenses which have the built-in motor too.
There's a list of lenses with the motor here.
I now have a D90
In the end I decided that I definitely wanted a D90, and by getting a D5000/D3100/500D I was comprising, and that I'd probably regret not getting the one I wanted. I managed to get it on 6 months interest free credit. Next stop is probably a 50/35mm F1.8 Prime.
Thanks for all your help people.

Good choice, I jumped from a D70 to D90 a while back.
Dont forget to grab the updated version of Nikon View NX2, version on the cd will probably be out of date
The D90 is a great camera and it's a bargain at the moment. Look forward to seeing some photos that you take

I reckon I'll be getting a 50mm f1.8 pretty soon.
