Video on the D5000 leaves a lot to be desired, I have it. It may come in use if you really need it, but considering it doesn't even have autofocus, unless you like constantly manually focusing during filming, you're better off getting a camcorder instead.

You mention you'd like to photograph animals - what types, because you'll most likely need some long lens? Something to consider maybe that the canon 300mm f4 has IS whereas the Nikon doesn't. Coupled with the 1.4tc you effectively have 630mm on a cropped sensor camera.

On the other hand you mention macro, and depending how serious you are, I *think* the Nikon 105mm is considered the best macro (anybody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I'm no expert).

Not really useful in helping you to make a decision I guess!

    Re: Help with camera choice

The video capability on the current Nikon dslrs is interesting in that it's immensely powerful in some areas and crippled in others.

If you want ease of use and autofocus, use a camcorder. If you want to be able to have arty shallow depth of field and use focus (albeit manually) for composition, then a dslr with a f/1.8 lens will give you something no other consumer camcorder can Yes you have to focus manually, but it's a skill worth getting - use can use it for stills too - I am learning that way

The Nikon 105mm is very good, both newer VR version and older non-VR. Ths Sigma 150mm macro is awesome - arguably the best 3rd party macro lens, but at 150mm it starts getting a bit long on a cropped body - a tripod would be more than useful.

    Re: Help with camera choice

so after a bit of research ive decided to scrap the idea of paying extra for video on a dslr. the final decision to make now is: do I get a Sony a230 or pay more 100$ more for a Canon XS? I feel the canon may be a better option in terms of going with a leading brand and thus having greater potential to take the hobby further as I improve? yet is it better to spend less, get the sony a230 and perhaps put that extra money towards a lens?

once again thanks to all for the advice and guiding me through the labyrinth or buying a DSLR.

    cheers

    Re: Help with camera choice

Sony had released some relatively cheaper SAM lenses which have decent optical quality for the price and the A230 has built in stabilisation too. Also,Minolta AF lenses will work on Sony dSLRs too.

However,I would consider the Pentax K-X TBH.

The Pentax K-X twin lens kit can be had for around £400:

There are many lenses available for the K-mount BTW.
