He's already got the kit lens, it would be a waste of money to replace that when it's actually quite good and he just needs more telephoto. Even that article seems to suggest the only thing affecting image quality in the kit lens is fringing at the extreme ends of the zoom range. By getting a telephoto lens in addition you take the pressure off the tele end of the kit lens, and fringing is relatively correctable in post process anyway.
If you're unhappy with the quality of pictures in the range covered by the kit lens or need more speed then it might make sense to consider replacing it.
Sort of
Am all bought up now and won't be adding any more to the mix for ages now (i think and hope).
Interesting read though.
Thanks
P.S. Kalniel beat me to it

Can I ask how your finding the 600D?
The only reason I'm asking is mine has been dispatched today and should arrive tomorrow and I'm getting the 18-55mm and 55m-250mm lenses with mine.
Anything I need to be wary of on these cameras?
I'm loving it!
I got the 18-55 kit and the 55-250 lens also. I do find that I need the telephoto lens - sometimes for wildlife, sometimes for framing shots, or just shooting distant objects. And its not that much hassle to switch, although helps to have a wife handy to hold a lens while you swap. People said that kit lens is enough, but I disagree purely from the zoom range, rather than the advanced issues of light, etc.
I can't think of anything that's not be satisfactory to be honest. Main problem is it's such a joy to shoot with I may need a bigger hard drive. I got a 32gb sd card and a spare battery, which is a dangerous combination.
I had an opportunity to try my friends 50d with a 18-200 lens and my 600d is so much lighter and more luggable. I'd happily buy it again so far.
Spare batteries are a tenner on amazon, if you want I can also link to the bag we bought, which has just enough space for the spare lense, the camera and battery.
And since I am here am gonna post a couple shots. Kept meaning to do this for ages now.

Thanks!
You've made me even more happier now to be getting my 600D tomorrow.
I've a few mates who work in pro-video and stuff so will be able to borrow lenses and stuff to play with
Also,
We've printed one of our photos (one very similar to number 3 i posted, but a different one) on a near A0 size canvas (slightly smaller coz it needs to get into a bricked in window) - looks brilliant.

It's arrived
Signed for at home at 15.15 today so I'll be playing for a few hours tonight at least with the kit, unless Diablo III draws me into its grasps.
Lee how are you finding the 600D? I am looking into replacing my old 400D body with it and was wondering what it was like under low light and PQ. Cheers
It's one hell of a piece of kit
Took a fair few images this week as I've been off on holidays so had a few walks and that and been snapping the odd images here and there.
