I'm not sure, hoping to go in during the next couple of days to have a look and a talk with them etc.

Wow, D3100 has already gone, nothing I could have done really, since I couldn't get there yesterday to have a look at it.
So it's currently between a 550D with kit lens at £380, or the D3100 with 18-105mm VR lens for £365. (D3100 also comes with a 4gb mem card, small carrying case (which I won't use) and a battery grip I think)

Have you tried either of them in a shop yet? (Can't remember, sorry!)

Re: Should I buy a decent camera?

Haven't tried either of those exact models, but had a go with a 450D for a week or two, and a quick play with a 600D. I'm not too worried about which one would feel better etc, since I'm fairly certain I'd get used to it, since it's not like I'm currently used to something different.

That's against the advice that I, and many others, have given in this thread, but OK - it's your money

You're lucky to have loads of camera shops in Manchester area.... Try em all and just see what they got.

The Real Camera Company, Jessops, Jacobs, LCE, Fred Aldous, Wildings ...

Shame that 3100 was a very good deal potentially.

That second one still sounds rather good, a useful first lens, will allow you do to wide angle landscape and portrait. Guessing that one is second hand?

I take it that is a 550D brand new? Myself I probably wouldn't go for it, when you consider:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pentax-K-R...#ht_7085wt_934
Now check, I haven't, I'll be honest, but that 18-55MM is normally the 2010 and later edition, which is Weather Sealed. So you've got a better body, and a much better peice of glass, that will work better in low light, then has IS, more focus points. I guess it depends how much video you want to do, as the Cannon is better at that.

If your looking at second hand, I'd give SRS a call.

They have always given me great service in the past.

If your not in too much of a hurry, join a photography group or something similar that welcomes beginers, you'll probably find one on meetup.com make new friends and if its anything like the London ones for the price of a pint play with someones camera, see if you like the feel. People often start semi-religious wars, but its all fun!

Re: Should I buy a decent camera?

g8ina, I'm in Witham, not Manchester

TheAnimus, that post just continues to confuse me, since it looks like the K-r is just a better camera overall (ignoring the video), yet I've had many people recommend the 550D if I could spend more (although as you've pointed out, they seem to be available for cheap when compared to other canon models :/)
There's no way I would buy that purple one I'm afraid , although that SRS link does look great. Reason I was looking at 2nd hand was because as far as I'm aware, DSLRs are well built, and it would save me money with very few downsides.

I reckon I will get the chance to visit a camera shop or two on Thursday, so I'll have a look at the Pentax offerings.

Ask them why, if they say something like "because for the money its got astonishing video functionality" then great. If they say its well made, or better image quality, then they are mistaken. But people do tend to get fan boy esk about it.

There was a thread here not so long ago where people got upset with my describing the 7D as a 'damp squib', even thou, none of them could justify its price compared to a D8000 or a k-5, both are cheaper and in almost every metric superior.

Cameras you get a unique fan boy POV. I fear to think how many thousands of pounds worth of kit I've got that locks me in to a system. So obviously I'm bound to be baised, thats why I've been saying its a personal thing about feel and hold, or just using objective stats.

Re: Should I buy a decent camera?

    No worries

Haha fair enough, I can see the sense of going canon/nikon if wanting to buy 2nd hand, since there is just far less pentax stuff around it seems.
But the k-r does seem rather good, bit of a step up to their next model though!

Re: Should I buy a decent camera?

    Went into Jessops earlier.
Had a feel of both the D3100 and 550D, can easily see myself using either, although I think the Canon was slightly more comfortable for first impressions.
They didn't seem to consider Pentax as competition for either the Nikon or the Canon at all :/

They also said if I could, it would be sensible to get my first lens as a 18-105mm or something similar.

Overall, not that helpful, since they both seemed to say, well, the specs are very similar, so it's a personal choice, but I can see myself using any of the cameras I've held!
Just going to wait a little more, and see if anything comes up at a very good price again.

If you have reason to, go to London or Watford, you might find some of the larger shops there have some more helpful staff, some less so!

Sadly I don't think I'll be heading to London or Watford anytime soon.

If anyone spots any decent deals, please link me
Still toying with the idea of the Pentax, but since I haven't had the chance to have a feel of one etc, looking less likely than the others :/
