That is quite an impressive range in something so small.

I wounder how much software logic they have to correct defects that must surely exist in a lens so small.

Don't have to exist - Olympus four thirds lenses are telecentric and in general have extremely good optical properties, while also being small.(Micro four thirds however do require correction, but they're even smaller still.)
