    Camera buying advice wanted

    Hi

I'm currently doing a fair amount of traveling and Ive been using a panasonic lumix point and shoot to take photos whilst im on my holiday and whilst it takes good pictures, I would like a better camera with more controls as I feel some what limited and would like to be a little bit more creative.

I've been looking at cameras online and in shops such as jessops but I feel a bit out of depth as I know very little about cameras. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction, my ideal budget is about £200-£300 and Id prefer it to be fairly small

Hmm, given your budget I'd say have a look at the Pentax Q or the Olympus PEN.

I like the Q and use it a lot when travelling now (see: http://forums.hexus.net/photography-...wned-dslr.html ) but given the fact they keep yoyo'ing the price, one min its £250. Then its £300. So right now the PEN looks like a cheaper option that would better fit your buget, it is however bigger.

The useual rule of play with it in the flesh applies.

Jessops have a £150 off the Fuji X10, bringing it down to £350.

It's aimed at retro photographers, more comfortable with Manual mode shooting. Not for everyone but if I was looking for a compact to take on holiday instead of my SLR, that's the one I would pick (by a long way).

The X10 had a problem interpreting hard highlights when it launched (so called orbs) but Fuji offered a free replace/modify on the sensor earlier this year, which has apparently fixed it. If you are at all interested, be sure to ask whether you would be buying the updated sensor and how you might get it updated if not.

My mate just bought an X10 off Amazon. Had a play around with in the weekend and there appears to be no orb issue even when taking a picture of a switched on bulb.

The G3 seems a decent camera:

However, remember that it only has a 28-84MM equivalent standard lens and if you want to go wider or longer you will need to invest in more lenses.
