Is there a good modern-day equivalent of a Canon A70?

I remember getting one of these 10 years ago, great fun, pretty much fully manual, but didn't cost the earth and fit in a (big) pocket. Took decent pics.

Need manual focus, aperture, exposure etc, this was a great camera to learn on with all the manual controls.

    Any suggestions? Thanks

Also what you want to shoot.

If you want great wideangle landscapes, mostly portrait, or stella low light.

Well you can forget about anything but the first one for a camera costing the same as the A70 did. You're stuck with 1/1.7 or 1/2.3" sensors which rule out the latter to any great extent. The A70 was a great landscape camera though (even if not especially wide) - my house is still decorated with 18x12" framed prints from it. Who needs more than 3MP?

Well, budget-wise, the A70 was £250 ten years ago, so something less than that :-p

And not for any specific kind of photos, I just want another good all-rounder with manual controls.

But makes you wonder doesnt it, 10 years go by, and it's not easy to think of a camera that meets a simple specification:

    - Good all round photo performance
    - Fits in a pocket
    - Full manual controls
    - Costs less than £250
    - Doesn't have fiddly/gimmicky touchscreen controls

    Hows about a Nikon
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005IFWZS...SIN=B005IFWZSW

    and a review
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/24696..._controls.html

found the review amongst this list of compacts with manual controls, but you will need to hunt out the prices

Hmm my back up is a pentax q, they had the q10 for £250 with prime at christmas.

If you want to be able to 'do more' but whilst been pocketable its a good option. However it only fits in a pocket with just the prime lens I find.

I was going to suggest a Canon S95(I have one) but they are more expensive now than last year, and we are talking like £50 to £70 more IIRC!!

The following cameras can be had(the links have the prices):

    Nikon Coolpix P7100

    http://www.camerapricebuster.com/Nik..._P7100_pc.html

    28-200MM/F2.8-F4.5

    10MP

    Olympus XZ-1

    http://www.camerapricebuster.com/Olympus_XZ-1_pc.html

    28-112MM/F1.8-F2.5

    10MP

    Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5

    http://www.camerapricebuster.com/Pan...MC-LX5_pc.html

    24-90MM/F2.0-F3.3 Vario-Summicron

    10MP

    Samsung EX2F

    http://www.camerapricebuster.com/Samsung_EX2F_pc.html

    24-80MM/F1.4-F2.7 Varioplan

    12MP

    Nikon J1

    http://www.camerapricebuster.com/Nik...m_Lens_pc.html

    With a 27MM/F2.8 standard lens.

    10MP

This is a small interchangeable lens camera.

    Pentax Q

    http://www.camerapricebuster.com/Pen...m_Lens_pc.html

    With a 47MM/F1.9 standard lens.

    12MP

This is a tiny interchangeable lens camera.

These are all good cameras - I would check the reviews.

    Fuji XF1

    http://shop.fujifilm.co.uk/fujifilm-...furbished.html

    25-100MM/F1.9 to F4.9

    12MP

    Fuji X100

    http://shop.fujifilm.co.uk/fujifilm-...furbished.html

    28-112MM/F2.0-F2.5

The Fuji X100 has great handling. It is built like a tank and the zoom is manual, not electronic.

The equivelant in the modern Canon range is probably the SX240/260, which was under £200 for a bit on Amazon. I had the A70 a few years ago, it was great until it just stopped working for no reason.

Edit: In fact, it's £177 if you don't want GPS... Here

I'm leanign towards this because after owning a Panasonic, I miss the well thought out menus of the Canons

I've got the SX220, and I'm very happy with it. I don't photo enough to need all the bells and whistles, but if I need some amateur-ish setting just above auto, it seems to be there. It's got aperture preference, Av, and all that jazz... From what I've seen, the sx240 is similar, but with a better sensor, and a few extra bells and whistles...

Does the SX220/240 have manual focus too?
