    Oly PEN E-P5 preview

    My it's a beauty...

Looks like a refinement of the well rated OM-D E-M5 in a smaller package. I'm getting seriously tempted to shift over to m4/3rds now - lots of small improvements each time mean eventually the image quality should be a step up from my E620 (though the lenses aren't as good quality yet).. and they're getting oh so portable.

Wow, looks great if you don't mind losing the optical viewfinder.

Will be interesting to see what the real quality of the results are like thou, because starting at £900, they had better be something brilliant.

Should be at least as good as the OM-D. Predecessor sells for £600 in kit so that's probably what this will come down too once early adopter premium wears off.

But if you're not fussed about the extra control/handling of higher end models you can get almost the same image quality from a £400 E-PM2 I expect. That would kind of miss the point though

    Re: Oly PEN E-P5 preview

It's funny, but we are seeing pretty much zero innovation in the Pro/Prosumer market.

Canon had that strange thing, in the late 90s it realised it could persuade everyone their glass should be re-bought in IS versions, or one that wouldn't crumble in the rain. Then on their digital they have gone feature made in terms of video and flip out screen, whilst neglecting build quality and low price point, Nikon has gone head first into many megapixels race, Pentax have done nothing really since Ricoh, maybe they'll find time to make another truly fugly camera. But nothing has really changed in the last few years, we have seen only iterative sensor improvements and things for video brigade.

There is this constant fighting around 'FullFrame' which I've yet to hear why is a good thing in engineer speak.

I think that a lot of these micro 4/3rds and below are quickly becoming the interesting area for photography, lenses cost less to make, weight less, take up less space. When you can make a f1.0 lens that will weigh less, cost less and give you the same performance as a people would get on a f1.8, these small cameras really start to be able to tick all the boxes as far as creativity goes.

Then you can have fun with effective low light performance for constant DoF, you can get really interesting benefits to pros and casuals alike.

Sadly I think a lot of people are stuck in a mixture of "I've bought into this for £10k no way it can't be perfect" and "it doesn't look like our established pro kit" mindset. Well I think we will see that these will be offering the best price performance by a wide margin very soon.

That said, I've yet to find an EVF that I have actually liked, rather than tolerated.

Yeah I'm the same with EVFs at the moment. At least they've moved on from field progressive scan models which just give me headaches.
