    dpreview closing down april 10th

I can't believe it, first Hexus now dpreview. The new fangled web3.0 is rubbish. Bring back the old days etc etc.

amazon won't even leave it as a static site. They intend to wipe it. Nuked from orbit at some point in the coming year after a short period of view only if the discussion is correct.

RIP dpreview. One of, if not, the best photo site on the web. I know I've used it loads. I am seriously miffed at this.

That's annoying, it is always my go to for camera stuff. I tend to value normal users experience over reviews.

WTF?? I can understand closing it to new content, but wiping it? There's so much knowledge in forums to just erase it all. Web3.0: If it doesn't enrich the corps it must be removed.

Also,it's concerning in general as information in coming decades can be removed/realigned as required by the powers that be. In the past you had physical books and magazines which would physically exist and you could go back to. It's all very 1984.

Re: dpreview closing down april 10th

Damn, their videos are quite in depth as well.

Just seen they're owned by Amazon! They really couldn't have sold them?
Someone would pay good money for 400k subscribers on YT alone!

Re: dpreview closing down april 10th

    Amazon bought them in 2007!

Slashdot is interested in archiving the website:
    https://twitter.com/slashdot/status/1638257681181073409

But Amazon seem to not only want to nuke the site but remove all the data.

The problem is that you've got to consider GDPR, user data, risk of hacking etc.

Leaving it there as a static source is a real liability, and that means it's a cost even to leave it in operation.

If someone else wants to duplicate it and take on that responsibility that's fair enough, but I'm not surprised that people don't want to keep them running.

I can understand a shoe-string operation like ....., ummmm, Amazon (?!?) .... struggling to resource that.

Re: dpreview closing down april 10th

A small update having watched the WAN show.

There is still no plan to preserve the website by Amazon.
Archive is apparently making sure they scan & log the whole site.

However, as pointed out in the show, things like Search or other such tools rarely work correctly on the wayback machine.

A further update; they're continuing with content but at what staff capacity I don't know.
