Best sites to buy a laptop from?

It's time to buy a new laptop, as the powerbook g4 has just died on me (and is about a year and a half out of warranty )

I'm thinking of getting a windows PC this time but have no idea where to start looking for a decent, yet reasonably priced laptop! My budget is £800 - £850, 900 at a push, it's going to mainly be used for work, music and browing the internet.

The specs I have in mind are: core2duo, at least 1.6GHz, 1 (If not 2) gigs of ddr2, a 15" screen, ample hard drive space, nice looking case, good battery life, decent graphics card, a quiet laptop which isn;t going to break my back.

Any ideas? I've had a look at dell.com and rockdirect.com so far, both look nice on the specs front...but not so nice on the aesthetics front.

    Thanks for any advice

I don't get on with MacOs too well...I need all the Microsoft suite...which you can't get on Macs. Such as Visio, Project etc..so I'm definatley looking for a windows PC.

We have bought 3 or 4 Acer's from laptopsdirect.co.uk in the past 2 years or so, had only positive experiences.

It's 17" and bloody huge, but it's really quite nice.

I'd not go for Acer, I find there build quality low.
    Dell's are ok
    HP and Toshiba are lovely
    Sony are good but expensive.

Toshiba have been doing a special extended warranty of some of there new models, 3year extened warranty for £38 and if you have to clame on it at any time, then you will get a refund for the value of the laptop as well the repair.

You can run Windows on a Mac
And you can also run MacOs on a pc
Macs are now built with prity much standard pc hardware which is makeing there prices far harder to justify.

I have an "Acer laptop" aspire 5601 AWLMI nearly a year old now, and never had any problems with it. So dont rule Acer out completely.

Ah, but what does that actually tell us? That HP/Compaq laptops were better built than Acer 4-5 years ago... It doesn't necessarily have any bearing on their relative qualities now.

where to buy ? www.apple.com/uk ... www.dell.co.uk (specific models, not in general). IBM and Toshiba are also good.

I prefer not to buy Acer. Their quality has never been impressive enough for me.

We've had 20 - 30 hps in the last 2 years of which half or possibly more as of this morning have failed...totally given up failed lol

Dell is my choice. Apple second. I base my opinions on warranty service. Build quality is good from both...macs look better.
