    Dell Latitude D430 freezing.

I've just picked up a second hand Dell Latitude D430 which is a fantastic little machine. However, a couple of days after installing a clean copy of Windows 7 x64 on it, I'm experiencing random lock ups requiring me to force a power off. In both instances I was browsing the internet with Opera in turbo mode - I haven't seen a lock up elsewhere, but 2 locks up is hardly conclusive that that could be the culprit. It may also be that a driver hasn't installed correctly but again, it's very early days trying to find out the issue. Also ran a deep hard drive scan which has come back that the drive is fine.

I don't have much experience with Dell (I usually build my systems so know exactly that I need to set it up with), but I'm really just wondering if anybody does have experience that could help me out with the freezing issue or point me in the right direction of exactly what to install on it should I do a reinstall of Windows 7.

Should also mention that in one of the freezes everything stopped (inc the clock, which is usually my sign that it has hung) yet the Windows circular busy pointed was still animated. Very odd.

Check the hard drive SMART information using HD Tune trial, then run a memtest

Using HD Tune Pro; I have warnings on:

(C4) Reallocated Event Count - warning:
although it says status ok when clicking on it.

(C5) Current Pending Sector - warning:
Number of unstable sectors 929709466 - the drive has unstable sectors

(C7) Ultra DMA CRC Error count - warning:
Number of interface communication errors: 34582744
There were communication errors. This may be caused by a damage cable.

Just installed Memtest to USB stick and will run that too. But we may already have our answer.

Yep, its the drive. And expect it to be a pain, as its one of those 1.8" drives in those dells

    Re: Dell Latitude D430 freezing.

Thanks for the help. I'm presuming any 1.8" drive will go in there, and not something with a proprietary Dell interface?

Memtest just did a first run with no errors btw.

    Re: Dell Latitude D430 freezing.

Ok, do you mind if I pick your brains again for a minute? See what you mean about these 1.8 drives being a pain. Hard to find anywhere (I presume that's what you meant) so I'm going to have to go the ebay option.

Anyhoo, I've found 2 potential replacement candidates.

    First: Toshiba 80GB 4200rpm.

and the second: Samsung 120GB 5400rpm

Naturally the Samsung stands out having more capacity and higher spinning speed, but do you have any idea if the Dell will be fine it? It's mostly the heat output I'm concerned about, but shouldn't be much more higher.

Both should be fine, obviously you will get worse battery life with the faster drive though

    Re: Dell Latitude D430 freezing.

Got a new battery coming through the post so can test what sort of life I'm likely going to get out of it with a 4200rpm drive. If its plentiful then I may go for the faster drive. Although the extra drive space is also hard to ignore.

    Cheers again.

    Re: Dell Latitude D430 freezing.

    It's this:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004JED73A

The stock is kept in Amazon's warehouse and sent by them, so I figured that if anything is wrong they can be accountable and/or getting it refunded would be far less hassle than if I went through a supplier in China on ebay.

I can't afford Dells £110ish asking price for a proper one unfortunately.

Very wary about buying these things, although I did buy one from China for my other laptop and I've not had a problem with it.

I wouldn't really trust it, or believe its the best battery life you can get out of it. There is a reason why they are so cheap. I see so many dead laptops that have these in them

    Re: Dell Latitude D430 freezing.

I understand the risks but, being a student, I can't justify £110 on a laptop battery.

Can you justify buying a new laptop? and wasting £30 on a battery that will die in a few months?

    Not very logical..

    Re: Dell Latitude D430 freezing.

I've had nothing but bad luck with 3rd party batteries and in the last 3 years I've had two DOA and another two die within a week of use - I only ever get genuine batteries now.

In my opinion; Dell overcharge for batteries so I don't recommend you buy directly from Dell. Instead, there are usually new genuine Dell batteries available on the bay for about £50 or less if you're lucky, but watch out for those batteries deceptively sold as new or genuine - there are a lot of these.

    Re: Dell Latitude D430 freezing.

Well the thing arrived yesterday so all I can do is report back. I bought a battery for my old laptop last year from a Chinese supplier (half expecting the worst) and it's worked surprisingly well. Perfectly well, in fact. Still has a very good charge and lasts just as long as the original battery did.
