    staggered purchase for new desktop

    Hi All,

I'm considering investing in a new desktop for a small study. My resources only allow me to contribute a little at a time so I might stagger the purchase over time. As such, what are your suggestions for which bits to purchase 1st for best price/futureproofing. The only bits I already have are the peripherals and a 750w Corsair PSU. Presumably it'd be best to get a case 1st and then add to it as and when.

I'm a moderate gamer though the pressures of 2 little kids help keep that hobby to a minimum. Space is tight too so I mid tower is the max size I could plum for but it would be shut away so cooling could be an issue. I'd rather not dabble in water cooled.

    Any suggestions?

If you're only gaming moderately, then you might not need a graphics card at all - the AMD FM2 platform might be ideal. It depends what you mean by "moderate".

You could get the case sorted early, as they can easily last 10 years or more, along with monitors and other peripherals. As for the heart of the PC though, the motherboard, CPU, memory and GPU, you'll probably want to get them at the same time.

hmm, would that be beefy enough to play bf4 etc? By moderate I mean frequency but I suppose that's a bit of a pointless statement as I still need it to be capable of running recent games regardless of how often I play them. I've not had AMD since the thunderbirds waaaay back in the day is it still teh 'budget' choice?

If you wanna play stuff like bf4, you should probably consider buying a gpu. Depends what settings and stuff you want to play it on.

Since you have kids, you'll need a sturdy chasis that will stand up to abuse.
Check out the ARMOR series from Thermaltake, also Corsair Obsidian and Vengence Series.

Moderate gamer perhaps get yourself a 7870? or a 660ti?
