    Best storage setup

Hi, I have just upgraded all my storage in my PC and NAS.

    I have got

    PC
    500gb Samsung 840 for windows 864bit
two seagate 3tb drives for storage

    Synology DS209 nas
Two seagate 3tb drives in jbod

I'm not keen on setting the seagate as raid in my PC and windows has a volume function that can set them as one volume.

It would be handy to have them like that but would I lose it all if I reformatted windows and does it have the same problems as raid0??

I'm leaning towards each HD as separate volumes but wondered if anyone had experience of this win8 feature?[/quote]

Storage pools are quite clever, but based on the storage that you have there (ie 2 disks) you're pretty much stuck with RAID0/1 anyways - to add resiliency without halving available storage you need at least one more disk for parity data.

    Re: Best storage setup

I'm not keen on software or mobo based raid but wasn't sure if an extended volume would have the same issues. I have ended up playing safe and having two separate volumes

An extended volume dynamic disk is essentially RAID0 by another name, so you've done the right thing.

Ah I didn't know that, thanks. Definitely made the right choice then!
