    Dell XPS13 9350

Anyone on here own one/use one? What do you think? Just ordered one but wondering whether I should cancel it and look at something else. Seems to get criticised for running hot and throttling - which worries me. Is it that bad?

    Re: Dell XPS13 9350

Yes and yes. Although it's my work laptop. If you're at the right grade/role you get one.

Can't say I've noticed much throttling or heat issues. Fantastic machine, we've got the non touch displays (never been a fan!) i7, 8GB, 256GB SSD.
It lasts all day, very portable, well built and not bad on the eye. All things considered there's not much else that's 'direct' competition. Sure other devices do certain aspects better, but as an all round package it's hard to beat.

Thank you. That's reassuring. Ended ordering a refurb as it's all I could afford. Hopefully it's not a damaged turkey.

    Re: Dell XPS13 9350

A lot of people complain that it throttles but often that is due to the TDP kicking in so to be expected. The 15" 9550 is more like a 14" and you have the option of the nvidia GPU. It does need a repaste when you get it to keep the heat in check during game and a few people are undervolting to keep the TDP in check.

    Re: Dell XPS13 9350

I would have gone with the XPS15 but it's 2kg and for a daily carry about it just felt too much. My wife's work one is 1.6kg and you can feel the difference. If it wasn't for that I would have been there with spades. When you say the TDP kicking in - that is essentially throttling - i.e. it can't sustain its full speed for long duration?

No that isn't the case in all situations, synthetic benchmarks yes but as the 9350 isn't really a games rig it isn't something you will be worrying about.

    Re: Dell XPS13 9350

Well, just got the order confirmation so it's paid and now I just have to wait for it to arrive. Hopefully it's not hamstrung being a refurb but I got a much better spec than I would have been able to afford otherwise so as long as it works and doesn't have a blemished screen.... (fingers crossed). As my wife keeps pointing out, the smaller size and weight will make a difference to my daily commute - my bag is already heavy enough as it is.

    Re: Dell XPS13 9350

It is amazingly portable. Whilst still feeling more than comfortable to do a full days work on. (As I type this I'm sat in Aberdeen airport!)

Still not 100% sold on the touch pad, but that's due to having used Macs extensively and I've yet to use any that come close.

out of interest did you get the dock for it? And do you use an external optical drive? I'll probably need the latter given the number of old programs I'll need to install from DVD/CD and can see myself wanting the former if I ever need to connect it to a LAN or external screen.

    Re: Dell XPS13 9350

Yes. Quite a few options out there but we've gone for the D1000 USB 3 docks, as we've got a wide range of laptops in the wild. We're an all Dell shop going forwards but not all models have USB C.

No, don't have a need for external optics. We've got a few kicking round but they're primarily used for any restores and systems that get wiped until we've sorted our deployment process out.

    Re: Dell XPS13 9350

Well it arrived yesterday. I think I've done ok, as it appears in very good condition for a refurb. A few (very very small) scratches on two places on the extreme edges/lip around the power connector and one corner of the top, but you have to look for them and I'm sure it will get a few more as use goes on. Otherwise all seems ok, except for that it chirps. Does yours chirp at you? When you scroll or use the trackpad there is a faint clicking accompanied by a high-pitched chirp a bit like a cricket. I wondered if it was the battery charging but it doesn't seem to make a difference whether it is plugged in or not. I imagine you wouldn't hear it unless it's in a quiet room like I had it in, but bizarre as at first I wondered if they'd put a HDD in there instead of SSD (Checked device manager, it is a Toshiba XG3 SSD). Now to find a way to use the downgrade rights and get it back to win7 pro.

Can't say I've noticed any chirps or similar noises. Usually it's in a reasonably noisy environment but I have used it at home and on the (relative) peace in the quiet carriages on the trains out of London.
Although 9/10 I'm using my trackball instead of the touchpad.

out of interest Guy are you on win10 or win7? Despite Dell offering the win7 drivers and win7 OS image for the 9350 they block me from downloading it as it demands my service tag. I thought win10pro automatically had downgrade rights?

    W10.
As far as I know W10 pro does or at least did include downgrade rights, but I couldn't think of a single valid reason I'd need or want to run W7 on it.

For our Precision 5510 units (XPS 15 in disguise) we purchased them as W10 but pre downgraded to W7 so they played nicer with AutoCAD and Revit.

My whole office runs on win7, I don't like the MS terms for win10, my home machines all run on win7, I don't like the file layout of win10, and I don't agree that MS can snoop on my files or machine use. W10 would be great, except for the BS privacy. It's win7 for me until 2020, by which time hopefully I'll have become proficient at linux.

Like yourself I need to use ACAD and Revit, Robot and a host of others - for which our licences et al are all win7 dependent.

    Re: Dell XPS13 9350

Went on Dell support and tried to email them - interestingly it lists my machine as having shipped in June2016, and there is a previous complaint history regarding the DA200 dock not working properly. Doesn't give me details beyond that, but since I've ordered one of those I will play with it this weekend to see if it behaves for me.
