New laptop that is as good as old pc

I need to buy a laptop. It will mostly be used for university, youtube and maybe the odd film. I don't really game anymore. My old pc is a 3 core amd vishera (can't remember the model number), it has about 8gb of ram and a hd6850. That was good enough for me. So a laptop that is as good as that plus a nice screen (I guess I want to go 15.6 inch) would be great. Any suggestions on amd vs Intel or where to shop would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

Oops! Just however much it costs to get what I need. I would prefer closer to 500 pounds, but if I need to spend 750 to 800 pounds then that is fine.

You can get laptops with a 6C/12T CPU for around £500,but usually the displays are not the best.

Re: New laptop that is as good as old pc

OK, first up your HD 6850 is a smidge faster than the Vega 11 you get in a modern AMD mobile CPU judging from: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-spec...-vega-11.c3054 (scroll down a bit, the 6850 is 9% faster) so if you aren't gaming then that's probably fine.

That gets you a Ryzen 4700U, which should trounce you existing desktop for compute power. Then it's all about screen quality, and whether you want the machine upgradable. If you don't care about gaming, then you should find a Ryzen 5 based machine quite fast enough, though they seem to come with smaller SSD and ram.

Intel is an option, just make sure it is a recent 10nm CPU or battery life will really suffer on top of performance which sucks when you are paying more for Intel

My son wanted portability, so we ended up with the smaller screen HP Envy x360 which he is really happy with: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/comput...06964-pdt.html

but then we did get it a few months ago before the back to school buying, so it was £100 off. It was a bit more than I was hoping to spend, but it is nicely built with upgradable ram and SSD rather than everything soldered down on the cheapies.

Linus did an interesting video on HP laptops: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhHOpWFNq68

Re: New laptop that is as good as old pc

The OP mentioned a 15.6" screen,so this should do the job I suspect:
    https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/leno...uk/version.asp

It has two SSD slots and two RAM slots:
    https://www.tech-critter.com/review-lenovo-legion-5-15/

So at some point you can add more storage and RAM too. However,at 2.3KG its not a ultraportable laptop! The base model also does not have the most colour accurate screen,if Photoshop is your thing, although you could always use a large external monitor for that.

    Edit!!

This one has a better screen and weighs the same:
    https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/asus...01/version.asp

    Review of the newer version:
    https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-R....523159.0.html

    Specifications of the older one:
    https://webcache.googleusercontent.c...nt=firefox-b-d

So appears to have upgradeable SSD slots and two RAM slots.

    Second Edit!!

Just looked again - the cheaper Asus does not have the better screen and no Window is included!
