Hi all,
I have moved home recently and have gone and lost the kettle lead that came with my 1kw coolermaster psu. I have a few kettle leads lying around will any of them do? Sorry for the nooby question but I have never had this problem.
Hi all,
I have moved home recently and have gone and lost the kettle lead that came with my 1kw coolermaster psu. I have a few kettle leads lying around will any of them do? Sorry for the nooby question but I have never had this problem.
Which fuse should I use? If I don't have the correct fuse can I just put the right one in and use that?
Please check the lead ( or IEC plug ) as if it has a moulded plug ( as most do ) there will usually be a rating stamped on it, somewhere near the earth pin.
If its is stamped 3A, the cable can only take 3amp of load ( around 630 watt)
I am a electrician and you learn that on the PAT testing course. . I have seen many a kettle melt a cable that was rated 5A and someone stuck a 13A in it.
Remember the fuse is to protect the cable not the equipment.
You will probably be ok but best to check.

The spec within IEC 60320-1 states 10/15 AMP. I was under the impression that they must be attached to a cable that can support at least 10 Amp.
I have never seen a 'kettle lead' with anything less than a 10 Amp cable. Are there any? A quick Google doesn't show anything up.
Anyone can do a PAT testing course, you don't have to be a electrician.
however I am a electrician and have been for 14 years.
Its surprising how many leads I find at work that are the wrong rating. 1.5mm is fine for 13A as most extensions are this. 2.5mm is used for most 16A supplies like commando plugs.
Going back to the original question, most cables are 5A or more so should be fine.

two sugars please!
*quickly goes to check all the fuses in my plugs*
