    Need A New PSU

I've been looking around for a new PSU, since mine is really old (10 years), and I want to upgrade it after making a new computer. I currently can't add any DVD/Blu Ray drives because of old connections on my current PSU. Looking at my specs, I was wondering whether around 750W PSU would be sufficient. I've been looking at both Corsair and XFX as they seem to be more reliable than some others and the Corsair service (replacements) seems pretty decent.

    My current PC spec is:

    i5-4690 3.5GHz Overclocked
    MSI Z97-G55 SLi
    (2x8GB) 16GB 1600MHz RAM
    1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm
    Gigabyte 4GB GeForce GTX 970
    22MP55 LG Monitor
600W PSU (which cuts out after some graphic heavy games)

I was thinking of adding another monitor but that won't be any time soon. I'm not too bothered about whether it's a single/semi/modular PSU.

    Cheers guys!

    Re: Need A New PSU

Should be able to get by on a 500W with that setup, guessing the 600W has deteriorated over the years!

I would look at 600W again, quite a price-hike to 750W and really cannot see that system utilising it.

    Seasonic, Corsair, Enermax....take your pick!

    Re: Need A New PSU

Hi and welcome to the forums.

A quality 500w unit would be more than enough. Reviews have shown that even 970 SLI systems only have a total system power draw of 450-500w so I would imagine that you are somewhere around 300w with a single card.

Here are a few suggestions for you:-

Superflower Golden Green HX550w £51.95. High quality Superflower units with a single 12v rail of 546w.
Antec Truepower Classic 550w £55.99. High quality Seasonic built unit with 540w across a pair of 12v rails.

If you want a extra 110w for the extra headroom:-

Antec Trupower Classic 650w £65.99. High quality unit built by Seasonic with 648w across a pair of 12v rails.
EVGA Supernova G1 650w £72.95. Gold rated fully modular FSP built unit with 636w across quad 12v rails and has a whopping 10 year warranty.
Superflower Golden Green HX750 Modular £72.95. Same price as above but a 100w extra. High quality Superflower unit with 744w on a single 12v rail. Semi modular so has the 24/8 pin cables and a pci-e cable hard wired.

You might want to look at this. It basically is a list of power supplies ranked from tier 1 to tier 4-5 I believe. Might make your choice a little easier.

    Re: Need A New PSU

10 years is a lot for a PSU. Solid caps in PSUs were non-existent back then and your venerable unit won't deliver even close to 600W these days. I'd be surprised if it delivers more than 350-400, tops.

Like others have already said, 500W ought to be ample and the list above is a good reference. Still, 750W will give you room to grow and today's top PSUs will deliver more of their watts for longer than your old unit. Right now I'd say Cooler Master V or VSM series and EVGA G2 is where it's at if you want to maximise the price/performance ratio. All are rock solid, have received only excellent reviews and cost less than comparable quality units from competing brands. And no, I'm not on either's payroll.

For reading up on reviews, JohnnyGuru is the site for PSU testing. Non Plus Ultra.

Yes, Superflower are a top tier manufacturer. I wouldn't have recommended them if they were no good. They also build the B2 (bronze), G2 (gold), P2 (platinum) and T2 (titanium) units for EVGA. EVGA place a lot of faith in them because with the exception of the B2 units which have a still very good 5 year warranty, all the rest get a industry leading 10 year warranty.

This is a excellent source for information on psu's with links to reviews, specs, warranty period and who actually makes them.

    Re: Need A New PSU

If you want to go crazy have a look at the Corsair HXi series. I ended up deciding to go HXi after looking at the RM series for the silence but wanted all japanese capacitors. The HXi is both silent and has awesome power delivery. Seemed worth it to me for only £12 extra

Yep, was gonna get one. Leadex gold or EVGA G2 (as OEM SuperFlower). JohhnyGuru and Techpowwerup have some indepth reviews on them and are on par (if not better) than Seasonic.

Not sure about the green ones as not read reviews.

You could place this Amazon link into Flubit (free registration) or Barclay Bespoke offers (free reg. plus don't need to have Barclays account). You could get upto 15% off the current Amazon price of £63.

Very useful - I always thought Seasonic made Superflower's stuff, rather than both being the manufacturers!
Worth noting that many of SuperFlower's own brand have LEDs in the connectors, which looks great if you're into such things... but is a glaring bright white light if you're not and further annoying because you cannot turn them off!

    Re: Need A New PSU

All the Leadex series have those led's and you can't turn them off which is annoying as they are so bright. I really don't know why they did that. It looks tacky to me and spoils a otherwise excellent psu. The HX semi modular and HX hard wired ranges don't have them. Because of those leds (not to mention the 10 year warranty too) I would take one of the EVGA G2, P2 or T2 units which is based on Superflowers equivalent unit anyway. More often than not the EVGA version is cheaper too.

I would hope that over a month later the op has his new psu by now.
