    Small, Quiet, Modular

After a small, quiet and modular PSU. Approx 500w

Not interested in SFX. Just smallest and quietest and modular of the 'normal' PSUs. Thanks

    Re: Small, Quiet, Modular

Your penultimate sentence got cut off so I'm not sure what you're not interested in.

Silverstone's ST45SF-G or SX600-G would be a pretty good choice for the smallest criteria. Their SX500-LG is slightly longer to fit a 120mm fan in so that may be worth considering too.

You do get 500W FlexATX and TFX units as well as Modular Flex ATX and TFX units but I haven't come across a model that includes both.

Most of Silverstone's current range are very compact - even their standard sized modular PSUs are only 140mm deep - I have the Strider 650 Gold (SST-ST65F-G)

I also have their SFX 450 Gold (ST45SF-G), which is very impressive for such a small PSU.

    Re: Small, Quiet, Modular

judging quietness is a bit of a pig as not all manufacturers state noise profiles vs load charts and if they do it's often not stated to what dBa or similar weighting they were measured to. Do however look for a PSU that remains quiet across its full range of load% and doesn't ramp up when it gets busy. even better look for charts which are based on sustained use and not just short term tests. Also see if they state what ambient temp they were measured at.

It's a shame IMO that there isn't a standard for testing and stating this as it wouldn't be too difficult to do and make comparing products so much easier.

Most decent brands should be ok but I have encountered PSUs that got very loud in summer when ambient temps were high and gaming loads were pushing the supply. it didn't help that the GPU was passive so the PSU was effectively helping vent the case too but boy was it loud.

    Re: Small, Quiet, Modular

I was going to add the Nzxt hale 90 information as it was a gold rated PSU with a very flat efficiency:load curve and also a very flat noise: load curve peaking at 25dBa. I see from the nzxt website however they have axed most of their PSU range and no longer offer the sensible models in the Hale90 range.

    Re: Small, Quiet, Modular

Koolpc? Is that you from OCUK? Same question with the same wording. I still stand by my recommendation of the EVGA Supernova GS 550w. It's a Seasonic built unit with a 5 year warranty, hybrid fan control, single 12v rail of 540w and is very compact at 150x150mm. Review here.

I would have suggested the EVGA Supernova G2 550w that Scan sells but it's longer at 165mm. This one is a Superflower built unit with 550w on a single 12v rail. It also has hybrid fan control and jonnyguru gave it a 10+ in his review. That's a score he doesn't give out too often.

Any particular reason why? I believe Silverstone bundles an ATX adapter in the box.

They also turn the fan off at low load, and it doesn't get any quieter than silent.

Do you have a budget in mind?

    Re: Small, Quiet, Modular

If you really don't want SFX you can get a fully modular ATX 500W Silverstone @ only 140mm: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/500w-...ficiency-atx-p
