I agree it is, I just think that it makes blair look even more stupid. Bush is clearly not a stupid man and he makes all the right noises. problem with Tony is, he has done it once too often and people cant trust some1 who continually asks for trust and fails to deliver.

Right, well I've been out the country for a long time but I am back (for a couple of weeks) and had the fortune of landing in Blighty the same day that the Hutton enquiry was released. To me, it appears to be a whitewash. My initial thoughts are as follows:

    1. It is possible to mislead someone by telling the truth; it's merely a matter of deciding which bits of truth you tell them. There's an excellent article by one of Robin Cooks old special advisors in todays Guardian:
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment/st...136791,00.html

    2. The remit of the enquiry was farcical. What the hell are we doing spending months investigating the death of someone who took their own life yet have absolutely no regard for the tens of thousands of people who have died through no choice of their own at the ends of the "war" on terror? Does anyone actually care about David Kelly? The situation was something of a tragedy but really, in the grand scheme of things, I fail to see the relevance.

    3. Hutton's entire conclusion is based on his interpretation of the phrase "sexed up". Has Gilligan been asked what he meant? Why were subsequent BBC reports that day made with the statement removed?

    4. The BBC have taped evidence from Kelly re-iterating what Gilligan said. Hutton seemed to ignore this in its entirity. Why?

    5. The government were cleared of "sexing up" the dossier, yet they requested mulitpiple re-writes of the document from the intelligence services. Why?

The enquiry was a farce, IMHO. This is borne out by the fact that it now appears to be far more damaging to the government than if blame had been apportioned squarely between both the BBC and the government. It seems that Dyke is not going to be leaving quietly, and is seeking legal advice as to the legality of Hutton's conclusions, based on the evidence heard.

The thing that REALLY angers me about the entire Iraq issue is simply this. To pre-emptively invade another country based purely on intelligence, you have to be ONE HUNDRED PERCENT DAMN CERTAIN of that intelligence. 100%. Not 99%, 100. It is PAINFULLY CLEAR from the way that events have transpired that the government was far from this level of certainty. I think that is disgusting, and I think that Blair should resign. I've just about had enough of his quasi-religious moral superiority.

Well, looks like the government has called an enquiry and looks set to lay all the blame on MI6, you couldnt really make it up could you. the remit of this enquiry that has been announced is going to be as narrow as huttons, basicaly a complete waste of time and money. I bloody hate this government, Incapable of admitting it was wrong, it made bad decisions, it lied and imo is unfit to be in power

Do they think we are stupid or something, tony`s spokesman said that "now the hutton report has cleared the PM of lying, we need to now look at the intelligence" what a load of S***E we all know tony lied its just hutton stopped short of looking into all the facts because it was beyond his remit. the hutton report has not cleared the government of anything for me it just raises more questions and makes the whole process look very dubious. how can we be expected to trust that the government will really have fully independant enquirys when the last one was such a whitewash?

Were people really expecting an "independent" enquiry to find the government guilty of anything? The thing that's key is that, amazingly, the government has chosen to come out of this (from their pov, at least) as ignorant and naive, rather than calculating and dishonest. Interesting how the tables can turn...

Hutton didn't give the exact right answer, but, let's be honest, it isn't the question that everyone really cares about. I was frankly more disturbed by the careerism shown by MPs on the Monday than the findings of the Hutton report. Time for electoral reform, methinks.

The bombs may not be falling on Britain but it is the working class who has to waste their lives building them and paying for them, whilst our public services are cut and privitised, whilst our wages and working conditions worsen, and working class kids get shot up far from home in a conflict they have nothing to gain from.

This War on iraq and Terror in general is as much an attack on the working class here as it is an attack on the Iraqi people. Providing a pretext for increasing state repression, curtailment of civil liberties inciting racism through the stereotyping of arabs.

you all forget to mention that bombs may actually find themselves walking into a high street store near you.

apparently Tony was advised that the threat of terrorist attack would increase if he invaded Iraq, Suppose he is glad that he will never have to deal with it, will never be his child or wife that gets blown up will it?

I read in the paper that the police cheif in charge of co-ordinating our counter terrorist stuff thinks that its WHEN and not IF it happens. should be obvious to anybody tho really, kill thousands of innocent muslims and it is likely that you are gonna get more extreme muslims who retalliate with whatever means they have.

They would like you to believe that it is a matter of when and not if, that way you have the concept of "total war" as the PNAC'ers would like to have it, constant erosion of civil liberties etc.

heh, I have that on DVD and manson impressed me, was very perceptive. but to be honest, you cant tell me there is no threat, I know if the poeple I care about had been killed by some political crusade like this I know exactly what I would be thinking.
I know that the government overstate the threat when they want to push through a bill that will constrain out liberties (e.g the data retention act being forced on ISP`s). but my point is, that there is an obvious threat and its our governments fault if we end up in the firing line, not for having lax security or not pushing through enough laws but for taking us into this war in iraq in the fecking first place.

even if we never suffer a terrorist attack (unlikely, the IRA did it easily enough I seem to remember) our soilders are still being killed out there by suicide bombers, RPG`s and of course the number 1 cause "american freindly fire" (dunno if that last one is really accurate, but they killed a lot of our boys before Bush prematurely declared it all over).
