I think we should bring back al lot of punishments as the law these days is pathetic. If someone is 100% guilty, without any doubt, then they should be punished in a suitably harsh way, even by the death penalty.

if you'd kill people who commit "the worst" crimes, would you support torture for "less-bad" crimes? If you'd only stipulate state murder for "100% certain" cases, how sure would you need to be to apply floggings? 95%? 80%?

and on whose moral compass are we rating "worst" and "less bad"?

A return to "traditional values" always amuses me, because people then immediately refute that they also want a return of the bad things that went along with them.

Yes, things are getting worse, but that's because people enjoy more freedom. It's a price that has to be paid for a society where you aren't forced into a particular mold, is that some people will misjudge what is acceptable.

Personally I'd like to see more consistant sentencing from judges, maybe narrow down their flexability when it comes to range of possibilities that more extreme crimes attract.

I wonder though, what would happen if you removed barristers from the equation? If the person accused of a crime had to argue their own case in front of a jury? Would it change things for better or worse?

Yes, I can appreciate a sentiment that we are too soft on prisoners, that we let them live, on occasion, to a better standard of living than their victims. However I choose to draw the conclusion that our society should be doing more for those in need, rather than it needs to be harsher on prisoners.
