does internet bullying exist?

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and thought I would pose this question. Does internet bullying exist?

I am a member of a couple of forums and I've witnessed people being targetted and being made the butt of the joke, rideculed and harassed just because they disagree with the most vocal members gang mentality. I'm saddened by this and have even been accused of being over serious and not 'getting' the joke when I have stepped in to try to get some objectivity into a thread...i.e. challenged the bullies.

I just want to hear any thoughts members here would have on the matter? Is this common on forums? Do you believe it happens?

I think I got told I smelled but SIM defended my hygiene's honour

People can get a bit too serious at times and arguments start, and we harass spamers of course

No it's because he got off with his girlfriends best mate and was moaning about how much he loved her when she dumped him for it..

there's bullying for sure on forums, in different forms - i guess it depends on the users, but all ages can be involved. although when it comes to hexus the majority are respectful, and above all very helpful.

Bullying exists everywhere but it is hard to tell whether someone really is bullying or just joking.
Especially on the internet as you can't exactly get that feeling of the moment or tone of voice etc.

yes but when it happens, why don't people speak up?

I think for the most part we do, or try and make those involved seem like little old women.

Generally the threads get locked if it gets out of hand and users will get warned or banned. What else can you do?

Most forums are quite busy... well I can tell you the ATI forum is the least busy

Particularly General Discussion (+ its subforums), the Hardware forums and the bargains forum.

The scan forum is busy too, but it only for scan related enquires/comments

General Discussion and Hardware, but thats the only bits i really use lol. Shopping section is handy for bargains and selling stuff too

Yeah, I'd say it happens pretty often, and like you, I challenge it. I'm an argumentative bugger at the best of times, so enjoy the sport The most fun was pulling people up off-line, and watching their reactions.

I've often found that people who are pretty mouthy and arrogant on-line are pretty meek off-line, and they're just getting their frustrations out in a safer environment, where there's less fear of repercussions.

Similarly, people who haven't got a lot of friends off line are often the ones that form cliques on-line, as it gives them somewhere to fit in. I'm not talking about genuine groups who get together for gaming and the like, just weird little groups that form on more geeky sites I visit.

The thing that annoys me most though is on poorly moderated sites, when the mod team seem to act as if they're superior to the members, are quite rude to members, and expect people to ass kiss them. Which some folk, bizarrely, do. That baffles and annoys me in equal measure.

and to answer your question a lot of people are scared to stand up against bullies, sad but true

anyway seeing as you are a new user, what motivated you to sign up to here and start this subject?

ATI have a "support" forum here... although there is not much support there... It very rarely gets used and the ATI staff never come on anymore
