Yes!
No!
Maybe!
No need to 'replace' it - if something else does the job better and cheaper then people will buy that instead and the PC will die on its own.
But then, what do you call a PC? I think most phones are PCs.
Good point -time and place- But still, perhaps another example, such as SATNAV. This was a military tech that was used for a while by countries, and when their tech was devoloped further they saw an opportunity to make money by releasing old tech to the public sector. I just think computers wont be replaced untill its financially viable to. I mean how can we consider a computer evolution when a large proportion of people in the UK dont have Broadband yet!? Its means creating a class-gap between groups of people.
Cool thread !
Lets not get confused though, GPS is the underlying technology, satnav is just an implimentation of that technology. Consumer grade GPS has been around almost as long as the military stuff. Now however, consumer equipment is probably far better than what "our boys on the front line" have. This isn't about amounts of money being spent either, the military can't keep up with the pace of change due to the processes that equipment has to go through before it is accepted as suitable for field use.
As of this post only two people said yes and one person wasn't sure lol!
Not all military tech is hyper advanced stuff! For example many of the computing systems are actually built for extreme reliability and not necessarily processing speed. In many cases the systems are hardened against EM radiation and extremes of temperature for example and have to undergo extensive testing to make sure that they do not have any bugs. This takes time and precludes the military from using the latest consumer computer tech in the first place which has not been fully tested to military standards. The times when the military end up having the edge is when they are the originators of the tech and when they allow it to filter down for civilian use.
The real thing is, we have no idea what tech any Government really has, they could have laser guns, hand held nukes, the power of a super computer in a desktop PC, spaceships that can fly to the sun and back within days.
We will never know what they have.
Going by how bandly a government does at basic security and information leaking out, I highly doubt it.
Sure there are government financed research houses (QinetiQ, formerly Dera is one) but they are partly private and although they produce some interesting stuff, it's hardly the work of Hollywood.
I gave up watching the X-Files years ago
It's hard to believe, I know, but it's quite easy that amazing stuff exists that "only" a few hundred people in the world know about in a secret base somewhere in the American Desert i.e. PMs and Presidents do not have access to these facilities, they have their own "President" and "Vice President", these facilities have 20 top scientists with 20 top engineers and specially chosen individuals to run the facility, these people never leave, they have a community inside the base, they do not need to go outside to civilian land.
It's movie quality stuff, but who knows what's out there.

Really? Honestly?
Wow. How exciting! Do they have a device, lets call it a gate, that lets them travel through the stars?
I'm sorry, but I just don't buy it. If it is that bloomin secret then how is it known about?
I'm with Saracen on this one.
I'm the kind of person who carries around a phone, ipod and a pen drive in my pockets. Sure, I get all these functionalities in one device, but they wouldn't be as good. I like my phone because it's easy to phone and text people, fits good in my pocket and has a handy camera for when I don't have one. I like my ipod because it's got loads of space, plays my music and videos, I can plug it in the computer, sync up and be off. I like having a pen drive to carry my files since it's just so easy to plug it in and do what I need to do. All of these are reasonable cheap and do the job excellently. I've not found a single device that can do all these things just as good for a reasonable price.
I think we've learned from experience that trying to create one device that does EVERYTHING is very much possible, but no where near the best solution.
I know it's completely impossible, but imagine having your entire pc on something the size of a pen drive. It would have all the power of a pc, but in the size of a pen drive. You could just plug it in a tv, get out your wireless keyboard and you're away. If it could also double up as a brilliant phone and mp3 player then, and only then, would you be able to completely replace the standard desktop and laptop pc. Of course, that's completely impossible... so my answer is no.
thats easy question, how can pc be replaced? PC will become wireless connected but display with wider monitor will always be the choice for people.
