    Capital Punishment

Do you think we should have the Death Sentence in the UK, for crimes such as murder and rape, and lesser crimes such as robbery should goto jail? Your views please ladies and gentleman.

I used to. Now I'm not so sure.....

What if new evidence turns up and it turns out that the person was indeed innocent.

Some cases- yes. People who are DEFINITELY guilty of heinous crimes, yes! Why waste taxpayers money keeping them in prison?

/edit - also, punishments should be much harsher. If we gave 10 years for assault, people wouldn't hit each other (as much)......

i'm all for it depending on the actual case and the evidence surrounding it...

if there was the possibility of any doubt then it'd be a no.. but in cases e.g Moors Murders, where the convicted actually admits to the crimes then no sense keeping them alive imho..

Yeah, but sometimes new evidence comes up after someone has been imprisoned, when in fact they were innocent. If they were executed, there would be no going back and no 'Sorry mate, have a million quid....'

Not with our current legal system - I don't trust it.

There are to many miscarriages of justice within our system to even consider such a penalty introduced.

i think personally, at birth ALL babies should be blood tested so they have a record of everyones DNA. It may be a Big Bro is watching thing, but if you do nothing wrong, what do you have to phear. Having DNA evidence at the scene of a murder is one thing, finding somebody who matches it is a different matter, this way they could work there way thre witnesses alot faster, as just cuase your DNA is there, dont mean you did anythin wrong. what you think?

I'm with Skii - keeping people that we might despise alive is a worthwhile price to pay for not killing an innocent person in my view, and we know that people have been acquitted of murder on appeal (and don't start with the "it's a technicality" stuff, please, I'm talking about people demonstrably, provably innocent) who would have been executed if we had capital punishment.

Subject to the appropriate conditions, circumstances and procedures, and for the appropriate crimes, yes I do.

But that does NOT mean that we just mimic the US system which, in my opinion, is badly flawed.

Definitly not as I believe everyone has the posibility of being reformed. If a judge sentences a murderer to the death sentence he's just as bad as the murderer and has no right to play God. Whats next? police being allowed to beat up someone who started a fight?

If it's done after a trial, and with the approval of the justice system, maybe thats not such a bad idea. It may make people think before they start a fight.

my dads mates son, was witing at a bus stop, smoking his LAST ciggy, when 4 youths came up to him, and asked him for a fag, he showed them the empty packet and they called him a liar, and gladly prceeded to kick the living shi** out of him. Now he isnt able to smoke, due to being paralysed from the neck down, and being fed threw a straw, with 24hr care. Your telling me those 4 don't deserve to be tuaght what its like to be beaten up? (evidently they are also in police care due to half the boys family being nutters and ametuer boxers) if it was up to me, they'd be killed, they taken a life, (maybe even worse) and will get a few years tops, in a prison where they'll have to be tuff to survive, so i doubt there gonna be fairies when they walk out.
