Life sentence for Jodi's murderer

Luke Mitchell has been sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend Jodi Jones.

Mitchell, 16, was convicted last month of killing 14-year-old Jodi in June 2003, in Dalkeith, Midlothian.

Trial judge Lord Nimmo Smith said Mitchell's cannabis smoking and his fascination with gothic rock artist Marilyn Manson's work were factors.

Defence QC Donald Findlay said the fight to clear Mitchell's name would continue.

Jodi was stripped, tied up and stabbed to death in woods near her home.

I'd be very interested to know what precisely made the judge think that cannabis and Marilyn Manson "were factors" in the case.

im sorry but smoking Cannabis in all the years ive been around it generally leaves people in a "cant be arsed couldnt care less" sort of mind set not a "oh i know ill drag my girlfriend to the woods tie her up strip her and kill her" ,a good scenario for this something along the lines of

Stoner 1 "Whats your problem man you looking for a fight?"
Stoner 2 "uuuh?"
Stoner 1 "uh?"
Stoner 2 "what?"
Stoner 1 "Dunno"
Stoner 2 "man im hungry wheres the munchies?"

I'm a long way from convinced that he's guilty. He did apparently smoke enough cannabis to put him at risk of psychosis though.

The judge betrays his ignorance and general prejudice by citing Marylin Manson.

I've said it before, no forensics, no witness evidence, not even a "voluntary" confession. Reports of an older man in his twenties acting "suspiciously" near the time and place of the murder. Maybe he did it, maybe he didn't, I don't know, but it seems to me that the evidence presented fell a long way short of "beyond reasonable doubt".

When my ex smoked cannabis it made her paranoid and hallucinate (swerving in the road to avoid somebody who wasn't there... )

Yes, maybe a bit, but there was a real change in her personality after smoking marjoramuana - she'd start accusing me of infidelity, not liking her etc... i.e. paranoia

Sorry but to be honest I couldn't give a flying **** what you believe, you can believe in god and blame him for all I care, I want to know what FACTS that have lead you to make such a generalisation about all drug habits.

Sorry but this sort of close minded ignorance really ticks me off, especially when it comes from someone in such a position of power, it reads like he didn't know what to blame it on so he blamed it on drugs, without actually know that it was drugs.

I know a fair few people that smoke cannabis, anyone care to guess how many murderers I know?

Yes, I completely agree, unfortunately her driving me was my only way home (I couldn't drive at the time)
