Why does New Labour pander to The Sun and its readers?

I am totally bemused and confused as to why New Labour is all out to win the backing of The Sun. Indeed, The Sun backed New Labour in the 2005 General Election.

Here's why I am confused: New Labour is supposed to be a left-wing political party. The Sun is a right-wing, Murdoch-owned, 'newspaper' <-- I use that term very loosely.

So, does New Labour believe in the editorial comments of The Sun or does The Sun back the policies of New Labour? Or both? Surely there is a major political disconnect here?

Of course, I could be cynical and suggest that New Labour is pandering to Sun readers simply to get votes. But far be it for me...

Because The Sun is the most-read paper in the country. Get the readers' votes (and their husbands, wives and children's by association) and you've won the election...

New Labour are by no means a left-wing party.

    Agreed

I wrote an article to their letters page after reading an editorial in a colleagues copy one day, it was moaning and bleating on about New Labour and how 'this' and 'that' stank, yadda yadda yadda.

I wrote ' bet you feel a bit daft backing them in the last election now don't you !?'

    Funnily enough it never appeared.

    cretins.

Am i not the only who finds the page 3 "ladies" political views absolutley laughable.

Thankfully I don'y buy the paper(read it as it sits on our table at work), but the bias to certain political parties is so blatantly obvious!

Why can'y most right minded people see through this?

Because your average Sun reader is stupid

I just heard on the news that The Sun is now backing David Cameron! LOL! WTF is all that about?

Does The Sun realise that Tony Blair is now a liability?

The writing style of The Sun (Trevor Kavanagh, its political editor) is quite interesting. It always makes statements like, "...and Sun Readers will want to know..." as if it's editors are speaking on behalf of its readership. No, Sun readers will not want to know. They are too thick to think for themselves.

At the end of an article about David Cameron, the paper lists a series of questions for David Cameron on things like immigration, law and order, etc. It then goes on to answer its own questions stating that this is what David Cameron *must* do.

What worries me is that someone like David Cameron may do those things just to win the backing of this trashy tabloid.

So, does Rupert Murdoch actually run our lives?

It's common knowledge that the Sun picks who's going to run the country and who's going to manage the England football team.

My father-in-law insists on buying the Sun and dropping it off at my house. I'm sure people who come in think it's mine. Must confuse them to see the Torygraph lying around as well

Just seen on Sky News that the Sun has come out in support of Cameron in the Tory leadership election. That will rattle old Bliar.

Yes, the Sun readers will want to know. Because the Sun tells them they will want to know. The Sun will make believe that the readers know why they want to know, but will know that the readers dont know. The readers will not know why they want to know, but will know they want to know nevertheless

    Everybody knows...........

Apart from Sun readers of course

The number of times I've heard people sprouting off "their" opinions, and they asked them why they think that to be greeted with a confused silence, since the Sun doesn't tell them why as they know their readership can be a little "slow"

Can you tell I love the Sun and its serious readership?
Oddly enough I know some perfectly intelligent people that also occasionally get the Sun aswell, usually citing reasons such as "sometimes tyou need to read some braindead cr@p"
What they of course mean is "I wanted to see some tits this morning"
