[QUOTE]Io's calderas (craters) are remarkably hot. "Our temperature measurements indicate hotter temperatures than any active volcanism on Earth," McEwen says. "It implies that the magma is magnesium-rich -- comparable to the mantle composition of the Earth. This is what happened on Earth during the Archean era, 2.5 billion years ago, when the Earth was hotter. That's interesting, because it suggests that we might learn something about ancient volcanoes on Earth by studying Io today."[QUOTE]

From the end of that page...

The earth in general was hotter.

So the earth was hotter, it spent billions of years getting cooler, and now it's getting hotter again...

    This is an excellent resource...

A NASA study finds that perennial sea ice in the Arctic is melting faster than previously thought—at a rate of 9 percent per decade. If these melting rates continue for a few more decades, the perennial sea ice will likely disappear entirely within this century, due to rising temperatures and interactions between ice, ocean and the atmosphere that accelerate the melting process.

Surely this NASA study is evidence enough....

As for the temperature of the Earth fluxuating over time (giving ice ages etc), isn't this due to the life of the sun (its change in size and type of star).

This rapid depletion of the ice caps seen over the last century could not have occured due the sun, the temperature change takes thousands of years.

The ice age cycles? The earth continually gets hotter, then cooler, then hotter, then cooler. We are in an interglacial period at the moment.

So your solution is to wait for the next ice age?

The sun is getting bigger and hotter and has been doing so for millions of years. Ice ages have happened in cycles of aqround 10000 years length. These factors seem unrelated, tbh.

We might not be the cause of these increasing temperatures, so what else can we do? Buy big fridges?

So you refute all that evidence that I posted earlier?

No, but I don't believe it blindly, it is not conclusive PROOF that we are the causes of global warming.

In general, I believe that scientific progress, discoveries, theories, etc, have to be rigously and thoroughly proved or disproved before being either accpeted or thrown out. Unfortunately, in the case, if we wait until global warming is conclusively proven, I'm afraid it may be too late for this planet (and, of course, mankind as well...)

It might be too late already. It might not be our fault and we might not be able to stop it. We're DOOOMED!

There're two view to these things... We can look at it and apply your view, then we can all forget about and simply leave a legacy of destruction in our wake. Or, we can say: "Fine, but let's see if there is something we can do about it." If we don't succeed, at least we know we've tried.

The big question is: Do you want to be a loser through and through or a loser who tries to win?

If something is hard to do it's not worth trying to do at all!

Just build an ark and call yourself Noah......

I'm afraid I have a slight different approach to life than you've... Just because something is hard doesn't mean that I would give up without trying. If difficult things are not attempted, human race would never have explorer beyond our own back-water, nevermind space. Throughout the ages, humans, having an adaptive body and mind and an intuitive approach to things in life have over come one obsticle after another. You comments not only reflect poor on you but also of all humans ever existed.
