i need a second opinion

my little bro (13 years old) build him a rig, a few years ago

cpu 550 amd black edition i think a dual core
4 gig of ram prob 1333 speed
500 hd
a nice 22 inch screen
and a 4770 graphics card.

a banded psu and a crap case, its ok just noisy!

he has some money but i do not want to spend it all on pc stuff

could just be a bug but in C&C 3 tw s graphics are poor,

i was thinking maybe a 6950, unlocked etc, (prob over kill) cpu still feels good but maybe that's to much money would a 6870 be a better buy.

re guarding games, he tends to play mainly RTS atm dawn or war 1, want to get him into SCII and prob the nxt big games cod and battlefield 3

Question i guess what would his best option be, budget card up grade or whole rig?

if i did the whole rig i would go for the low end icore 3 that about 90ish on scan

What PSU,case and motherboard does the computer have??

An HD6870 1GB for around £125 to £140 seems a decent upgrade. OTH,Command and Conquer 3 should be fine with an HD4770 IMHO.

to phage, yesh would keep the screen, i can't remember what the psu and case and mb are. basic lower end. i remember i spent some money on the psu it a corsair 500w not sure of the model though. well buget wise, well would a 6950 be too much, or worth it over the 6870? have win 7 64 bit on the machine atm. if i changed the psu it would mean just getting that scan brigde psu - in a bundle if i can with some ram. and i'll sell the old parts of his pc to family to help raise extra cash.

Have you tried unlocking the cpu??

The 6870 would seem ike the best cost efficient upgrade as then it should'nt need a new PSU and you also shouldnt have problems shoe-horning the 6950 into the case he has as it aint small.
