Gaming PC for battlefield3 + future

    Hello,
I am looking at these components for a build
    scan.co.uk/savedbasket/3741ce16f78b4f6688f7ee8262753153
As the board needs me to have 5+ posts before I can post URLs, you will have to insert the www prefix yourself(sorry for the inconvenience)
I would like people to look at them and tell me if I made a silly error.
Half the components didn't list a power requirement so I think I got enough with that PSU.
Going to recycle my old atec 300 case.
    Many Thanks

Do you watch Blu-Ray's? If so, seems to be a waste.

12GB's of RAM seems to be a waste as well, 6GB is enough for everything, if anything I would go for 8GB.

With the money you saved, you could get a better GPU, so what resolution do you play at? This plays a big part in what to choose, since some cards can do better at bigger resolutions then smaller ones.

Forgot to add, you should add a nice aftermarket cooler to keep the CPU nice and cool.

Re: Gaming PC for battlefield3 + future

    Hi,
Sorry for taking a while to get back to you.

    I'm planning on upgrading my monitor(old CRT) to a LCD 1920 x 1080

I'm thinking that games may move over to blu-ray so want the DVD drive for the future and movies if they switch exclusively to blu-ray.

If I were to change GPU what do you think I should aim for, bearing in mind this is roughly the price range I'm aiming for.

Thanks for the help so far

    Get a z68 board + 2500k and 2 x 4GB sticks of DDR3.

At 226 for that GPU, I would get a 6950 instead....or try and get a cheaper 560Ti.....with the money you saved on mobo/cpu/ram you could possibly even stretch to a 570 or 6970 if you really felt it was necessary.

The 6950 can still be unlocked, yes. I don't see why you are getting the i7 960, when the i7 2600K is about £40 more expensive. The RAM is £111 for 12GB at 2000Mhz, though I think you would benefit more from getting 8GB worth of RAM at 1600MHz for nearly a 1/3 of the price - it would then allow you to use that extra money to buy the i7 2600K. Also, you should go for more less noticeable RAM sticks - the tooth like design can get in the way of some CPU coolers.

The GPU you have decided on doesn't look like it will be getting stocked anytime soon, and if you plan on SLI in the future, you might want to invest more in a PSU.

Games won't be switching to blu-ray. It's not a very highly regarded medium; digital distribution is the way forward. Movies, I'm not so sure about

can you still unlock the 6950?
Nope. They are now laser locked. Unless you get an old model, it'll be a bog standard 6950.
