Upgrading PC - would appreciate feedback

    Hi all,

I'm looking to spend around £400 on a major upgrade for my gaming computer, essentially just re-using the previous PSU, disk drives, hard drive and graphics card to bring the rest of the machine up to the standard of the graphics card. I just picked the RAM because it was a brand I knew, it would be great if someone could suggest some that better matched my system. I plan on keeping this system for a very long time so even the most minor of improvement suggestions/criticisms would be welcomed!

    Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) ~ £170
    Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
    G.Skill 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX Memory
    Noctua NH-C14
Fractal Design Define R4 Midi Tower Case

Corsair HX Series 520W Modular PSU (From previous build, around 5 years old)
MSI 6950 HD OC (From previous build, around 1 year old)
    1TB HDD F3

What CPU do you have in your current system??

Apart from that the parts you have listed look fine - I would make sure you use 1.5V RAM with IB. Also,Amazon have the CPU for around £166:

I have an overclocked q6600 that must be about 5 years old now, as is the motherboard etc. What is RAM with 'IB'?

Also, if I wanted to splash more cash on memory, would I be better spending it on more (16GB) or RAM that has better timings or RAM that's more than 1600mhz?

    Thanks for your help!

IB is Ivy Bridge - the Core i5 3570K is an IB CPU. Is this the RAM set:

It should be fine with your build.

Yep, that's the one, thanks. I thought you meant 'is the RAM ivy bridge' and, if it can be, I didn't realise it was possible for RAM to be ivy bridge specific? So I was confused about that.

Double check what cooler you have, Noctua NH-C14 will have no ram clearance issues, but the Noctua NH-D14 needs low profile ram.

I'm definitely going for the C14 so it should be ok hopefully!
