Question Ideas for my HTPC for sub £450

    Hi all

I'm looking at building an HTPC to replace my NAS and DVD player. Here's what I've come up with so far. Any ideas would be appreciated:

    Case: Silverstone ML03 (£60 ish)
    Motherboard: Either;Gigabyte F2A75M-D3H AMD A75 Chipset (£65 ish) OR ASRock FM2A75 Pro4-M AMD A75 Chipset (£60 ish)
CPU: AMD A10-5800K CPU (£90 ish)
RAM: GeIL EVO Veloce Hot-Rod Red 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (GEV38GB2133C11DC) (or something of similar speed, £40 ish)
SSD: Something fast like Kingston HyperX 3K SSD 120GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s (£65 ish)
HDDs: I've already got a couple of 2TB drives I'll RAID. If it won't all fit in the case I'll velcro the SSD somewhere.
Optical: Some kind of Bluray writer (£65 ish)

PSU: Not sure on this. It'll need to be a short one because of the case. There's £70 of the budget left for this. Hoping someone can help!

    Thanks

    I would get a 65W TDP A10-5700 instead of the 100W TDP A10-5800K.

This PSU should do the job:

    Here is a review:

However, there is this SFF modular PSU:

    Both PSUs are gold rated.

A Samsung 830 would be a good choice for an SSD:

Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah, didn't really think about the TDP. Good point.

The second PSU would be the better one as it's only 100m deep rather than 140mm.

I went with the Kingston because of its speed and price - according to overclockers .co .uk it's:
    - Maximum Read: 555MB/sec
    - Maximum Write: 510MB/sec
for £65 which I thought was a bit of a bargain, especially considering it's 120GB.

EDIT: Same SSD at Scan is £78

I have the Kingston myself and its been not too bad at all(I won it). However, the Samsung 830 is a very good SSD. I suppose the savings on the SSD could be put into the PSU for example and/or a quieter CPU cooler.

Thanks for that. Just noticed the 65W CPUs can't be overclocked, can they?

Reckon the rest of the build will be ok? I'm going to be using it for encoding quite a lot.

OH, need a keyboard too! Ok, let's make it a sub £500 PC

Re: Ideas for my HTPC for sub £450

The 65W TDP CPUs are locked, but I suspect overclocking them would probably increase the TDP somewhat!!

What software are you using?? AFAIK,HandBrake is getting OpenCL acceleration. There are some media keyboards here:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-...oards-cordless

    http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-...esktop-bundles

    http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-...ards-bluetooth

Regarding encoding, you could go for a 95W TDP Phenom II X6 1045T or an FX6000 series CPU and a discrete card. However, power consumption will be higher.
