'Beginner' Questions concerning building a 2-3 way GPU system

So...erm. I've been sticking to laptops now for some 7 years and Im planning on building a desktop computer. Basically Im trying to cut the price down but I still wish to have certain features in it. I would also like to mention that I'm quite new to building a PC (atleast from the bottom up).

My wishes for the system is:
    * A processor with as many cores as possible (preferably WITHOUT SMT/HyperThreads)
    * A system with 2-3 CUDA capable GPU:s
    * Some 16-32 GB of RAM.

What Im looking at now is:
    Processor: AMD FX-8350 BE 8-CORE 4GHZ 16MB SOCKET
    Motherboard: ASUS CROSSHAIR V FORMULA-Z 990FX AM3+ ATX
    GPU(s): 2-3x ASUS GEFORCE GTX 650 1GB PCI-E VGA/DVI/HDMI
Power supply: OCZ ZS SERIES 1250 WATT POWER SUPPLY

My question is to you guys (who most likely have oceans of more expertise than me). Will the power supply be sufficient to supply the 2 (3?!) GPUs and will the Motherboard actually be able to carry those 3 GPU:s (it seems to me the motherboard have some spacing between the slots). Also, what is your opinion on the choice of CPU and maybe some recommendation concerning the tower?

Thank you beforehand and Best regards

    Wrait

Is this for gaming?? Or is it for folding??

If it is for gaming I would buy one faster card, and a smaller PSU. Not so sure for folding although you are just running separate cards, not rendering frames,so I think AM3+ should be fine,as a 990FX motherboard is the cheapest way(I think) to support three cards.

You could get a GTX670 or HD7970 within the budget. The FX8350 should be OK with multi-threaded games, but a Core i5 will tend to do better in lightly threaded games, and have similar performance in the majority of multi-threaded games.

Also, with a dual card multi-card setup for gaming, I probably would be more inclined to go with a socket 1155 based system.

I personally wouldn't bother with the GTX650, it uses the smallest, least powerful Kepler core, and kepler is rather restricted for compute anyway (the only reason I can see for using multiple CUDA cards). One GTX580 would give you a lot more compute grunt than three GTX650s.

The power supply you've picked would be ridiculous overkill for the GPUs you've specced. A decent 600W would do the job for 3 650s.

I think you'll be better off explaining what you intend to use the computer for, and we can then suggest a more suitable specification. I can't see any purpose for which the build you've suggested would be the best option!

I completely agree with scaryjim, telling us what the main purpose of use would be a big help.

Re: 'Beginner' Questions concerning building a 2-3 way GPU system

    Hi

Main reason would be computing actually. But, just to clarify, Im more interested in having several "weak" GPUs rather than one "powerful" GPU. Most of my applications uses OpenACC, CUDA or OpenCL. As such, my main focus is to get a system running with as many "cores" as possible (hence the 8-core AMD) and as many GPUs as possible.

    Thank for all responses

    Best regards

    Wrai1
