Take the bits out of the case and see if they run fine?? You might have had a short somewhere??

It is running out of the case. The only thing I can think of is the motherboard 24pin connector might not have been plugged in correctly but I'm assured it it.

Do you have the cpu 4 pin connector plugged in as well. Also check ram sticks. Mostmof my previous faults are down to ram. Have you access to another system that you can try all the individual parts in?

    Re: Budget £600ish PC

From what I can deduce, the mobo or PSU might be malfunctioning, but since you have tested the PSU we can scratch that...
    1. Reset BIOS than try to run
    2. Assure the thermal paste is applied properly if it isn't applied correctly the CPU could be shutting off due to heat problems.
    3. Does it give any POST beeps?
    4. Assumption is made that the clear CMOS jumper is in the "Normal" position.
    5. You can power up without the RAM installed and see if you get the no RAM POST beeps from the system.
    6. Without any parts to swap, there is little that can be done.

    NOTE:
Here is what happens just in case you wish to pursue the test of the PSU.
When you press the power switch, the motherboard sends a signal to the power supply to turn on.

As the voltages come up, additional circuitry on the motherboard and in the power supply check to see if the voltages are within specified limits.

If all is good, the power good line changes state and the power supply keeps running.

You have the power starting up, but no power good signal.

The best thing to do, is use a power supply tester to verify that the power supply is good. The second best is to try a different power supply.

The RAM and Paste are the best suggestions from what i an gather. Make sure you install coolers and RAM correctly, do not over push things into place but at the same time be firm.

Replacement motherboard arrived (with a 8 pin ATX CPU power socket not 4 pin) and now everything works!

PSU, ODD, HDD, SDD are in. Next job is the motherboard.

Edit : everything is nearly done. All that's left is the GPU and then cable management

    Re: Budget £600ish PC

Forgot to post that the build was eventually completed and is running well. My cousin has left out proper cable management (which I'll fix next time I see him) but tells me it runs fast!

    Thanks everyone for the help.

If anyone's interested here are the specs :

    I5 3570K
    Gigabyte DS3H (new version)
Crucial 8Gb ram (anything else was way too expensive at that time)
    LG optical drive
    Seagate barracuda 1tb
    SanDisk pulse 120gb
    XFX 7870 2gb
    XFX 520W psu
    Zalman Z11
    AOC 22" monitor

Total price was under £700, not sure by how much
