Windows 7 or 8 for a new build

Hi, I've just about put together my new build and I was about to install win 7 pro on my new hard drive but seem to have lost my disc.

I'm going to have to buy a new OS so should I go for:

    1. Win 8 upgrade seeing as its cheaper than 7. [45-50 quid vs 60-70 quid]

2.Or is win 8 another vista that should be overlooked til Win 9?

    Thanks in advance.

If you just need the install media then you can download the ISOs from Microsoft easily. If you have a valid licence, I do not think the upgrade cost is worth it.

Re: Windows 7 or 8 for a new build

You can download the Win 7 Pro ISO from this site.

    32-bit Windows 7 Professional x86 ISO:
    http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent..../X15-65804.iso

    64-bit Windows 7 Professional x64 ISO:
    http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent..../X15-65805.iso

Source: MyDigitalLife - Direct Download win7

Burn this onto a DVD. If you do not have a DVD then grab a 4 GB flash stick and convert it into a bootable drive. Extract content of iso onto flash stick and ensure the bios is set to boot from flash stick first or use advanced BIOS boot option.

    2 PCs, dual booting 8 and 7.

One PC resets when waking from sleep.....only on Win8.

Other PC BSODs with DPC errors every day or two while waking from sleep....only on Win8. Reinstall (or the new Win8 "reset") fixes it for a week or so.

Both PCs suffer DPC latency stutters when doing anything from idling on desktop to watching a video to playing a game.

So yeah, noticing stability issues. Although maybe its an Intel/nVidia thing, don't have an AMD system and/or gfx card to test with currently.

I do have 5 installs of Windows Server 2012 running 24/7. One on a physical box (HP ML110 with Q6600 CPU), the others are VMs on my ESX cluster (which exposes the AMD CPUs to the VMs)......not having any issues at all with them, although I do not sleep them.

Re: Windows 7 or 8 for a new build

Both the OS are very good but I always choose to stay with the tested and proven one until windows 7 didn't came up with Service pack 1 I chose to stay with Win XP (its still in dual boot). Windows 8 however I feel is bit confusing without touchscreen. I would like to stick with Windows 7 till its deadline of 2020 hope Microsoft comes with a worthy successor for windows 7 and 8.
To answer your question you can go ahead with any one (7 or 8) both are almost similar in performance.

I reluctantly decided to go for windows 8 seeing as my copy of Windows 7 was in use on a family members PC.

I just built my new rig and bought Windows 8 after reading some benchmarks that showed that some games actually perform better.
