    Suggestions on finishing gaming build.

    Hi,

I am in the process of building my first gaming rig and would appreciate any suggestions on how to finish my build, mainly on the cooling side of things.
This pc is purely for gaming. I play all genres of games!

    So far I have bought....

    Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45-GAMING
GPU: MSI GTX 770 TWIN FROZER OC
    Case: CORSAIR CARBIDE AIR 540
Hard Drive: Samsung 256GB 840 Pro
Monitor: Dell U2412M 24" Widescreen LED
    Keyboard: Tt eSPORTS Knucker
    Mouse: Tt eSPORTS Theron
    OS: Windows 8 Pro

    I am undecided on.....

RAM: 8GB Vengeance Pro 2133 MHz or 8GB Dominator Platinum 2400 MHz. Is the Dominator worth the extra £37 ?
CPU: i5 4670K Haswel. I hear the i7 is not needed for gaming.
PSU: Corsair HX 750W or Corsair AX 760i depends on CPU cooler.
CPU Cooler: Corsair H110 or Corsair H100i. The H110 for all round 140mm fans or H100i fro the Link software ?

The case comes with 2x 140mm on front and 1x 140mm on rear.

I am unsure if I should mount the cooler on the top as an exhaust or mount on the front of case in push pull, then use the 2x 140mm as top exhaust.
If I go for push pull am I better of dropping the stock fans for 4 identical ones?

I would like to overclock the CPU and maybe double up on the graphics card at a later date.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated as it is my first build.

    With regards to your queries;

RAM - I think it was shown that for most practical uses (productivity and gaming) that there minimal benefit beyond 1600mHz. So if you have to choose between those two, the Vengeance is better value or go up to a 16GB kit.
CPU - Yes at present, most games don't benefit much from HT. With your 770, overclocking the i5 will be better value.
PSU - I'll leave this to others who are more familiar with PSUs.
Cooler - I would go for the H100i for the control, MSI boards don't have easy fan control like Asus does and the H110 uses independent 4 pins for each of the 140mm fans. The H100i is also a slightly fatter rad IIRC, but if you don't mind the noise or prefer keeping it full tilt all the time, H110 could better fill the 280mm spaces on the Air 540.

Re: Suggestions on finishing gaming build.

Good point on the RAM, I did not even consider that!
16GB of Vengeance 1600 MHz is nearly the same price as 8GB of Dominator 2400 MHz.

I was speaking to an IT guy at where I was working today and he recommended on seeing what temperatures I got with the stock fan first before buying a cooler.

    Thanks for the reply.

Re: Suggestions on finishing gaming build.

    Overclocking memory modules on Haswell is child's play. 1600Mhz @ 2133Mhz running flawlessly (Crucial® Ballistix® Tactical Tracer 1600Mhz 8-8-8-24 1.5V)

He is right with the stock cooler, but I haven't managed to overclock beyond 4Ghz at auto voltage (1.18-1.2V) with it. Not sure if the H100i would be really necessary. Unless he plans to increase the voltage above 1.25V.

For the haswell CPU's, it's highly recommended to buy a cooler, I'm going with a H100i + AX760 (not 'i' because I don't think it's worth that extra £30), RAM, 8GB 1600mhz is more than enough for gaming.

    Thanks for the response.

I think i'll go down the 'i' route with the AX760i and H100i mounting it on the top of the case as an exhaust.

Building it will be fun, thankgod for youtube !!!!
