Please help me compile a build :)

Hey guys, its been a really long time since I have built a computer (I have an AMD2 from 2008) and my brother computer recently broke so I will give him mine and I will make a new one!

I am not even sure of compatibility these days, I think I'll get an i7 (is there going to be any advances anytime soon like new models?) It usually helps if I explain what I will use it for, primarily for general use, nothing intensive but like to know I have something powerful under the hood. I also have dual monitors (30 and 19) and occasionally play COD but this is the 19 due to crap GPU. What I propose will probably be overkill as I don't upgrade too often, the important things to me are start-up time and I always get the "install boot mgr" message so I just leave the Windows7 cd in the drive. I also want something that will copy data from USB quick as we are now moving to the HD generation and need to not wait too long for quick transfers.
I am also a clean freak when it comes to my tech and want minimal air movement.

Could I please ask someone to check compatibility?

    Motherboard: any recommendations
CPU: Core i7 [no idea of the difference between Haswell, Ivy bridge, Sandy Bridge, i5?]
Heat Sink: Thermalright TRUE [my current one fits the S775 sockets, will it fir on the new intel CPU?]
GPU: GTX 260 [old rig - can I passive cool this, the fan gets dusty and will it fit new motherboards?]
    Case: Antec P182
    PSU: Corsair 550W
Cooling: Noctua Fans one on case and one on heat sink
RAM: not sure how much I need but will probably max it out with recommended RAMs
    HDD: 2 Samsung Spinpoints
SSD: did have an unreliable OCS flashdrive that was 32gb which was always getting full with my programs. which is most reliable?

Thanks a lot for the help guys!!

Uh, what's the main use for this system? Oh and upgrade the GPU to like maybe a 600 Series GTX or if you have a bigger budget, GTX 770, if not 760. If it is for gaming and mild video editing, an Intel Core i5-4670K might help you out but do watercool the CPU. The motherboard if you wish can be an ASUS ROG Maximus VI Hero...

Re: Please help me compile a build :)

    What is your budget?

Frankly whilst what you have looks like a really nice system when it was new, I think just about anything these days will feel faster.

Sounds like you want an SSD in there though. I went for Samsung as they have a good reputation, and 250GB was enough for me to fit Windows and a few games on.

An i5 is an i7 with some options turned off, most notably hyperthreading. most people won't miss that.

Passive cooling a GTX260 strikes me as hard and expensive, I would look at a modern equivalent as power efficiency seems to have improved. If nothing else, Nvidia are pretty bad when it comes to silently forgetting about older hardware. It works, but they optimise for the new stuff. Again, we would need some idea of budget to know what to recommend.

USB 3 will help with speedy transfers, and that is pretty common on modern boards.

Edit to add: A quick cross reference of benchmarks make me think the GTX260 is roughly on par with a GTX 650 or an AMD 7770, so an £80 modern GPU would equal it (slightly better I think). Not hard to get something better than that but very quiet, again all down to budget.

Hello http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/1ykW4 these parts are all compatible, will be very quick and will allow you to play games for some time into the future. That computer will be very good and quiet once built correctly. There is no need for an after market cooler for the cpu, it wont be getting too hot and the cooler on the graphics card is very quiet too along with the fan in the psu.

Hi IrishCallaghan, really appreciate you taking the time to spec me up a computer and I am really grateful for the forum having awesome members!

I've just made some changes and seeking more advice, thoughts?

    CPU - Intel Core i5-3570 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor £158.39 £158.39 Aria PC
Buy (this is a lot more expensive than I would have liked, should it be “future proof” for the next 5 years? Also never bought anything from Aria PC, they any good?)

Heatsink – Thermalright True Spirit 120 M BW LGA 2011/1366/1155/775 and AMD Heatsink £28.2 Will also get this HS http://www.scan.co.uk/products/therm...d-amd-heatsink

    Motherboard - Asus P8H77-V ATX LGA1155 Motherboard £69.99 FREE £69.99 Ebuyer
Buy (I have been approached by UseItNow who is selling “Asus Maximus Gene-Z (Z68 mATX) Motherboard - It comes unboxed and is only the Motherboard & I/O Shield. After £60 (+P&P) on it.” Would you say that this is a good deal? Not sure how old the board is and it doesn’t sound as if it somes with anything especially the warranty/guarantee)

Memory - Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory £58.56 FREE £58.56 Amazon UK (bit anal and I know that 8GB is more than enough but is there a cheaper alternative where I can use up all slots on the motherboard?, alternatively happy to get this one)

    Storage - Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk £79.99 £79.99 Aria PC
Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (does the 2TB come free with the other one? Is that one quite reliable? , does SATA 2 still work as I am currently using two Samsung spinpoints)

Video Card - on a cost basis, I’m happy to just use my GTX260 for now

Power Supply – UseItNow also has a PSU for sale “I've still got my Corsair AX750 Fully Modular PSU, as advertised here: http://forums.hexus.net/classifieds/...87-50-inc.html” Its prices at £80 but I will offer £70 ac it looks like I can get something that fits my needs for cheaper and buying from the forum is just to support the guys as I’d rather give money to our guys than a corporate! Also does it matter that the capacity is much larger than I need? If not I’ll just get the 600W if UIN wants more than I want to pay
Corsair CX 600W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply £58.25 FREE £58.25 Amazon UK)

    Optical Drive - LG GH24NS95 DVD/CD Writer £14.99 FREE £14.99 Amazon UK
Buy (would it be worth getting a blu-ray writer?)

    mobo 69.99
    ram 58.26
    SSD 79.99

Re: Please help me compile a build :)

For the CPU I could suggest to try eBay.
Last month I got my i5-3470 for £100.01 inc postage (vs £148.xx something it costs in shops).
Z68 Gene-Z is a very good board, wonder if not too good for your needs plus you can't overclock your CPU and that board is build for overclocking.
Try Scan Today only deals, seen 8GB kits for a tad cheaper plus still free postage.
For SSD I would rather suggest Plextor M5S from Scan or other retailer cause I am not familiar with that 830 EVO but it does sound like a Sandisk Pulse grade SSD and for the price you can do better.
Never mind. Just read the 840 EVO review and it does look like a interesting drive.
Couldn't understand your question about some free 2TB but you can use your existing and new drives any way you will like as long you will have enough SATA ports (All SATA 3 are backward compatible).
I would say even the 600w is too much for your needs 450-500w should be enough. Like a XFX core 450w for around £35.
Do you write BR disks at the moment? If not then don't by a drive you will not use.

Re: Please help me compile a build :)

There is someone on here selling the i5 3570 for 140, I've made an offer for 120. One problem that I had with my current system is that I have to leave my installation disk in the drive as it always says install boot disk manager. I think it's to do with the bios not being able to be updated. So think its to do with the mono.

What...leaving the installation disk in the drive???
Look, if you have a valid Win7 key then just download the OEM ISO from the web, create a USB installation key with a Win7 USB installation key creator and do it properly.

I think you're hinting my serial is not legit but I can assure you it is. I did some research and it for some reason when I try to repair my OS, it asks me to install boot disc manager but it goes away if I leave the installation disc in the drive.

No, all I am suggesting that you re-install your OS and to avoid any complications use USB.
Did you actually tried to repair? By any means possible...
Also do you plan to re-install once you have your new HW?

easiest way to fix bootmgr issues is to reinstall with just the OS HDD in the drive. Works 99 times out of 100 for me.

Hi Vincent make a backup of your important documents and then try re installing you OS like Marcvs said, hopefully that will fix your boot issue. You don't get the 2TB Seagate Barracuda for free, I thought maybe you could use it for backups of your OS and other drives. I have never bought anything from Aria PC it was just the retailer that PC Part Picker choose, I have always bought my components from Scan their delivery is lightning quick to Ireland so it must be even quicker in the UK. If you can get that power supply and processor for those prices it would be very nice. Your GTX 260 will fit in modern motherboards. The Asus Maximus Gene-Z motherboard is at a nice price, it will work with the Intel 3570 and also the RAM I told you about earlier. Also there is no need to populate all the RAM slots on the motherboard it will work just fine once you put them into the correct two slots which I think are the 2 red slots. I think the RAM I showed you earlier was blue but of course you can pick whatever colour that is available and you like, red would look nice with that Asus Maximus motherboard, as a previous person said there can be some nice discounts on the Scan today only page found here http://www.scan.co.uk/todayonly/index.aspx . A Bluray reader might be handy if you watch a couple of Bluray movies but I don't think there is any need for a Bluray writer, I bought one and never ended up writing to any Bluray discs so it ended up being a waste of money. That heat sink seems ok, maybe have a look at the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo http://www.scan.co.uk/products/coole...55-1156-1366-a it is also a bit cheaper than the one you told us about previously. I think that is it if you need help with anything else feel free to ask.

    Hey guys,

Thanks for the posts and apologies for going on the defensive stance :$

I am 99pc with all my components,

    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H, USB 3.0 Intel Z77, S 1155, DDR3, SATA III
    CPU: Core i5 3570
Heat Sink: Thermalright TRUE 120 [had to buy a new bracket for the 1155 and created a make shift heatsink bracket for my brothers comp. he now has a noisy Artic Cooler 7]
GPU: Will now be downgrading to a 8600 GTS passively cooled as the GTX260 is too noisy/powerful
Case: Antec P180 with one rear fan, one front intake, one on cpu, no roof fan
PSU: 600W Corsair Builder Series CX CP-9020048-UK, 80 PLUS Bronze
RAM: 8GB Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Low Profile Jet Black PC3-12800 (1600) I want two sticks but too expansive given its a budget build and I know 8GB is more than enough but I hate things not matching i.e. want two empty rather than three
HDD: 2 Samsung Spinpoints (500 and 320), they're quite noisy I think but I can't afford a sexy SSD atm.

Re: Please help me compile a build :)

Is there a real need for a Z77 board while not buying a K class CPU?

Also, "Will not be downgrading to a 8600 GTS passively cooled as the GTX260 is too noisy/powerful". - You what...?
