Back to the PC fold - £880

Been without a gaming PC last few years and making do with my PS4.

However with Dragon Age Inquisition around the corner - I need to up my game.
Aswell as several kickstarters I've backed....! (Hi Star Citizen)

This build has changed a lot from when I started - and this topic is more a log of my build....why - never built before and somehow typing about it online will have a calming influence on me (and motivational!)

I've changed parts plenty of times - even from when I introduced myself to this forum.

But decided to change it all for a Red & Black theme

Anyway, this is for gaming (obviously) and a fair bit of media work I'll be doing over the next 6 months. A SSD is being butchered from my old laptop.

Build will be starting within the fortnight - assuming the estate agent is sharpish at returning my deposit.

PCPartPicker part list: pc part picker /p/skHCMp

    CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor (£179.94 @ Scan.co.uk)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (£24.25 @ Scan.co.uk)
Thermal Compound: Noctua NT-H1 3.5g Thermal Paste (£6.99 @ Scan UK)
    Motherboard: MSI Z97-GAMING 5 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£106.76 @ Scan.co.uk)
    Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory (£59.79 @ Ebuyer)
    Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£59.04 @ Scan.co.uk)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card (£289.16 @ Scan.co.uk)
Case: NZXT H440 (Black/Red) ATX Mid Tower Case (£87.98 @ Novatech)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (£63.31 @ Amazon UK)
    Case Fan: Fractal Design FD-FAN-SSR2-140 66.0 CFM 140mm Fan (£8.57 @ Scan.co.uk)
    Total: £885.79

Obviously Red & Black Theme explains a fair few of those components.
I will be overclocking the CPU at least.
Also went for a fully modular PSU on the recommendation of others for this case.

    Looks good.

I'd question why you are bothering with expensive thermal paste on a cheap cooler, I'd be surprised if you could even measure the difference.
The cooler isn't pretty either if you are going for a black and red theme.

    Perhaps this one:

    Works great on my 4670k.

PSU is a bit high wattage, but it's not much of a waste, so meh.

Both the new dragonage and sc support mantle and if you look at the recent reviews of the latest civ it has helped a lot in improving minimums in the game and more consistent frametimes too. You can get an r9 290 for £200 to £215 now with many having game bundles which can drop the price by at least £20.

Also there are some deals to be had on the gtx780 too including a game.

I figured why not spend that on thermal paste to be honest - compared to everything else it's still cheap

You know - I failed to look at other after market coolers....
Cheers - that's me sorted for today and Google

Quite liking the look of Phanteks PH-TC12DX_RD

    Red - so suits.

And seems to do a good job at cooling

I've got the MSI 970 myself, but this is a good deal...I might've gone for it had it been on offer a few weeks ago

Re: Back to the PC fold - £880

    Thanks -

I'll add that on my watch list as well as a couple of other things CAT-THE-FIFTH mentioned in this topic and another.

It's all going to come down to at the end when I get my deposit back (don't have much faith in the agency to make it a speedy return)
And what offers are on at the time
